As my first post on the health site, I just wanted to invite any of you that are running to lose weight to a road race this weekend. It is the Mtn. Glory Challenge, 5K and 10K, in Marion. Registration @ 7:00, race time is at 8:00. This my annual race and the one thing that actually keeps me exercising since I don't have time to do too much. Any of you in the vicinity and want to run a good race, drop on by. It is usually a very small race (50 - 100 folks usually) with a bunch of door prizes. It is sponsored in part by Habitat for Humanity, so a part of the procedes always go to a good cause. If you have never run a race before, you need to try it, especially if you are the competitive type. It's always a lot of fun. Hope to see some of you there.

I want to run in a holiday race. I have ran 2.5 miles 8 days in a row now. I ran the Turkey Trot at Southpark back in college and I am trying to get back in shape. I finished that 5 mile course in 39 minutes and then proceeded to puke my guts out at the start finish line. If you got a link for all the holiday races locally, post it.

    Yeah

I run every other day. It's usually 2 to 3 to 4 miles every other day. I make pretty good time but just working on endurance now.

I run around outside several times a week. Sometimes I go to the golf course on base, where they have a very scenic and beautiful running track. I mentally recite military cadences from basic and Tech School to keep up the pace. But there's nothing like a good group formation to keep you pumped up and motivated.

I am now up to 4 miles a day with a day off every week. I have a 10k race on Dec 6th and hope to finish it in under 1 hour. I am losing about 3 lbs per week.

What are your current intervals? If they are under 10 min/mile for the 4 miles, try to bust ass for 3 miles one day - then gradually work your way up to 4 again. Have you ever run 10K? If not, set aside a Saturday - soon - to do so, so that you can show your body it's possible. Then take a couple of days off (or just light jogging for a couple of miles).

In coming back from 2 knee surgeries, and now trying to get back in shape from laziness, I have found that setting a distance, then decreasing your interval, then lengthening the run, then decreasing again, and so on works best for me.

last night I ran 4.5 miles in 45 minutes, so I am right at 10 min/miles. A couple days a week I speed it up and do the 3 mile workout at 9 min/mile. I also go on a slow 5 miler on Saturdays that takes about 55 minutes. I was saying I run 4 miles a day as an avg distance. I haven't ran the 6.2/10k distance yet, but I am not intimidated by it. The only concern I have with my 10k in Dec is gonna be my time. Under one hour is fine with me. I ran a 5 mile race several years ago in 39 minutes, but was in much better shape. Of course, by Dec 6th, I will be another 10 lbs lighter (190's) and I fully expect a 55 min or so 10k.

Of course that is contigent on how man hills they sneak in there.
