No doubt and I am not so sure we have 2 right now. Moose? yes, Smith? I think he is spreading his talent too thin. he has heart but he will start to show ill effects from the pounding before the season is over

The first pass...Bright was fully extended in triple coverage and the ball went off his finger tips.

The second pass...I was to blitz too notice whether it could be caught. I kept trying to get Starkey to get me a cup of water to fight off the dehydration, but no such luck. He did give me the bird a couple of times.

    >>if there aren't two new starter-quality receivers on the roster next year, something's wrong.

I disagree completely. If we are getting one we're lucky, and if we got a 2nd it's a later-round return man type as depth and Smith insurance (he's RFA in a year).

Not sure if I we need 2 starter quality guys, but getting a starter and an Branch/Northcutt type player would be nice.

Of course, Fox said "two starting linebackers" and he went and got Fields and Witherspoon. Fields has been all we could ever ask for and ten times more. Witherspoon could probably start but the best thing he can do right now is cover and Fields has been remarkable at that so far. So you're not going to pull Morgan off the field for Witherspoon, even considering that Navies is probably still better than him as a cover man.

If we get a depth guy to be our 4th guy, that's fine. I do think we still have a need pressing at TE that can use a mid-round pick, but that's suggesting that either Mangum or Walls will be gone after the year, or both. Then again if both are gone we'll probably go FA, and if we think we're going to start Mangum I don't know if we'd feel it's a big enough deal to put a pick into. SO I'll probably go wanting for a TE for another year.

I can't be too hard on Bright yet. The guy is not a football player. He's a track guy in a football uniform. Given time, he could develop into a decent WR, but he IS a project player in a bigger way than Leander Jordan ever was.
I have been in similar positions and played wit/against people in similar positions. Butterflies create 2 very distinct symptoms...

    1. Like Bright, a guy does everything right except finish the play.

    2. The guy plays out of his head.

Would always prefer the latter, of course, but the butterflies are gone now. So, hopefully we'll see what he's made of next week.

Karl Hankton still has a job, therefore I'm pretty sure Bright will get at least one more shot.

I think it was the year we drafted Winky, going into that draft, I said, we would be in trouble at the WR slot, I made mention that Moose would be "injury prone". While I'll admit that the guy I suggested we pick... S. Moss is not yet a first rate receiver, the point is we needed a top rate guy 2 years ago.

The thing I never understood is the number of people on these boards that seem to think we just need a good #2 guy or #3 guy, or simply - more depth.

IMO, that is entirely the wrong approach and attitude and why we probably are still having problems at that position. I think next year you'll see this staff do what should have been done 3 years ago. Bring in a guy you think can be a #1 WR. If he beats out Moose, we'll be all the better, if we end up with a Holt/Bruce (of last few years) or a Rice/Brown type situation, is that bad?

We need to be thinking about a guy who can challenge Moose.

Sandy, in the perfect world you live in, that may be possible.

well, considering that most of us actually talking draft are talking about a first round receiver, I don't know what the huge concern is. As well, once the Peppers and Foster picks were out there, I was pushing hardest for a receiver pick next. This year my expected disappointment will be when we don't pick a TE until way too late.

Nonetheless, the person we need to worry about "beating out" is Smith. You replace the less talented player who has the ability to help you out in other ways first.

See, it might be noteworthy since we're putting these neat little numbers out to talk about various people that there are in fact two receiver positions on the field every down at the least...there is no defined single starter constant throughout every play, every series. It's generally who gets open first that gets the ball first. Only one guy has taken that from Muhsin since he became a top notch receiver, and that guy was player of the month for the league through his stretch. Throughout the rest of 1999-01, when Muhsin was healthy (or rather, playing, since he battled injuries he played with) he was for the most part the go-to guy. Nobody else took that off him, even though on a lot of teams you see that switch between two talented guys game to game.

Nonetheless, that also proves the need for a receiver, which was all but assumed anyway, because a guy to compliment and push Muhsin has always worked best to keep him as productive as possible and keep the team as productive as possible.

If we happened to stumble upon another Pro Bowl receiver, and that receiver also had a little more deep game, that's the greatest thing in the world. And then Muhsin is still starting on the other side. So it's a bit baffling to be hearing talk of replacing him as if it suggests that a guy could beat him and not Smith. I'm going to assume that's not what you meant entirely, and that your focus is finding someone better than Muhsin is, and, well, good luck. The point is, you should be talking about a guy who's going to be playing at a similar level to Muhsin, rather than competing with him, suggesting it's one's job or the other.

Charles Rogers seems to be it and he'll go #1 or #2. I agree we don't need another Donald Hayes, we need another Jeffers.

You're right, Santana Moss isn't a first rate receiver. Dan Morgan's on his way to the Pro Bowl and is leading the league's best D. I'll take Morgan :D
