Announcers should learn the rules

The average football fan doesn't know all the rules to the game, and thus relies on the announcers to provide truthful and reliable commentary.

Unfortunately, the high-paid commentators often know about as much as we do about the game.

Take the end of the Giants-Niners game. Cris Collinsworth says that because it was third down, the Giants holder could have spiked the ball and they could have tried the field goal again. Those sentiments were repeated back at Fox's main football studio. I read the same stuff in the Post and Daily News and on ESPN.com this morning.

I wonder how many people were gathered around the water cooler today complaining about Matt Allen, the dumbass holder who lost his nerves and didn't spike the ball.

Now, I read on cnnsi.com that the holder could not legally have spiked the ball because he had received a long snap. You can only spike the ball after receiving a snap direct from center.

    here's the story

So I'm wondering, how the fuck do these people -- announcers, football writers -- whose job it is to know the rules, not know the rules. And it wasn't just one or two. It was every last one of them. And there were coaches who commented that the guy should have spiked it. Hell, the holder himself said he didn't think he had enough time to spike it and get another play.

    What the fuck.

  2. Hey Grid, wassup!

I saw the "Sean Salisbury demo" last night on ESPN on what Matt SHOULD have done. I honestly didn't know he couldn't spike the ball, either - that one surprised me.

I feel bad for Trey Junkin - poor guy will be reverred in NY almost as much as Buckner in Boston.

they should pay attention to the games too. Keith Jackson and Fouts were pissing me off the other night. On one play, mcgahee got hit so hard his mouth peice went flying...they didn't even mention it. I think Keith's time is up.

Gotta agree Cris Collinsworth and Keith Jackson both suck.
