State would be crazy to fire Amato. Bill Belichick could coach there and they would never be a winner, but at least someone with charisma gives them an attitude and some reason for anyone to notice that they exist. In all seriousness, who would be willing to come to State who would be any better? No one.

If the athletic director actually wrote that and it was published that is really sad

Flag Thrower's Lettter to Chuck Amato
    Posted: 10/15/05 5:51:05 pm
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dear Chuck Amato,
You are indeed one lucky man. You coach football at a school whose athletics program is run by Lee Fowler. This man has the distinct honor of approving of a volleyball team which has lost every ACC contest for the past four years. This man has the distinct honor of approving of a basketball coach who sets low expectations and barely meets them. This man also has the distinct honor of being able to tell fans to accept mediocrity and doing so with impunity.
Only at NC State could you come in and tell the fans to expect National Championships, deliver consistent years below 4th in the ACC (a conference with little to no football prowess during your tenure), and keep your job. Only at NC State could you, while promising greatness, wear flashy attire and become the laughing stock of the college sports world and still keep your job. Only at NC State could you field a team that racks up over ten mindless penalties a game, penalties which are taught against in Pop Warner, and keep your job. Only at NC State could you come in, heralded as the savior to your predecessor’s ills, take his players(Rivers, Holt, Thomas, Cotchery) and be great for four years, then fail to accomplish anything once his players left, and still keep your job.
You have an athletic director who is not afraid to stare mediocrity in the face and run away. You have an athletic director who is happy to look at his fans and tell them to be happy because they have a jumbotron and to ignore the fools who are actually on the jumbotron. You have an athletic director who is actually worse than Les Robinson. And so you keep your job.
Even better, Chuck, you have had everyone snowed for the past several years. Your success under Philip Rivers allowed you to hide your own deficiencies and shortcomings from the media. It allowed you to wear those fancy sunglasses and abhorrently hideous shoes and have the media praise you without actual results. It allowed you to play musical chairs with your offensive coordinators and not field an actual defensive one for at least one season. Even better, it allowed you, truly, to accomplish nothing, but still have everyone love you.
Yes, Chuck, you are truly one lucky man. At least Herb Sendek hears calls for his head everytime he loses to our rival. Of course, at least Herb Sendek actually faces competition when he plays his rival as well, so there is some understanding when we lose to them. Then again, you also benefited last year from what is arguably the worst call in college football to use as a scapegoat for losing to a team you had no business losing to.
And, Chuck, you are truly lucky that few people have called you out for your bold face lies and incompetence. You are lucky that few people were stationed at the beginning of the Walk of Champions for the Clemson game. Because of this, only the band, the cheerleaders, and the colorguard saw what happened when I tossed a penalty flag in front of your path (nevermind that pesky ESPN camera). Only woodwinds actually saw me toss a second penalty flag in front of your path.
Remember this statement, in response to the question “What was your reaction when someone in the crowd during the Walk of Champions threw out
    a yellow flag?”, Chuck?
“I didn't see it, I heard about it. So I don't have any response to it.”
I must ask, lucky Chuck, how can you claim not to have seen it, when you were leering at me all the way through the Walk of Champions? How can you claim not to have seen it when ESPN clearly shows you looking at it? And, how can you claim not to know about it, when your own players were also leering at me, and when one of your players tossed the second flag out of the band’s tunnel?
Yes, Chuck, you are one lucky man. Anywhere else there would have actually been fans at the “Walk of Champions” who would have seen you stare me down with a look befitting that of a third grader. Anywhere else you would have been called out for the bold faced liar that you are. And anywhere else, you would have a competent Athletic Director who would not put up with your shenanigans.
    Count your blessings, Chuck.
