I think you overestimate the common baseball fan. The only thing most seem to know about Williams is that he's the last guy to hit .400 because that's the only thing the media repeats. Many don't even realize he hit 500 homers. And as for what Williams felt he deserved after four years, I think you grossly underestimate his ego. At least that's what I believe based on his books, tapes, and interviews.

And your switch-hitting jest also made me think about how good Mantle might have been sans alcohol. Some people swear he was the most gifted baseball player ever.

Williams said his goal was after he left the game was to have people say that he was the best hitter. He didn't think that he was after 4 years. Sure, Ted had a huge ego, but he was also realistic. He wouldn't blow sunshine up anyone's ass - especially his own.

Slydevl's fandom notwithstanding, I think this might be your most delusional statement yet. On a factual count, you look ridiculous for downplaying Pujols' early career when Ted Williams is the only player in history with a better start. Anyone remember where those comparisons to Griffey went? He sure seems to be silent on that count now that he's learned that Pujols really is more impressive than any of the other hyped media babies.

And on an aesthetic count, I guess it's just a matter of opinion but I don't find "fucking stoolpushing assbag" or "cum-drinking sack of wombat shit" are as impressive or inventive as things like "a walking semen stain with ... so much rotten cock stuffed up your various holes that you leave a wet spot every time you sit down" or "Of course that's assuming you'd ever have kids, which for you would require #1) clubbing or drugging a female into unconsciousness, and #2) hocking up enough of another man's semen and spitting it into the requisite orifice to compensate for having no working organ of your own." It might be hard to judge such things since certain individuals will be rooting against me, but if we presented the posts without names to some third party and asked them who got the worse end of the deal, I have no doubts about what they would say.

Helton's start was as good or better. Don't give me the BS about him playing in Colorado either. if you do, you can throw most of what Pujols has done out the window, considering all the bandbox parks out there and the overall lack of quality pitching. You put those variables in place and there are a lot more players, past and present, who at the very least compare favorably to Pujols.
