I know it's a job but why would he want to go back and work under George Shinn? It must be Bourbon Street!

Bristow a candidate for Hornets' GM position, He was team's coach from 1991 to 1996

Allan Bristow, who coached the Hornets in Charlotte for five seasons and led the team to two playoff appearances, has emerged as the leading candidate to be the team's general manager, a source said.

Bristow, who was fired as the team's coach following the 1995-96 season, said Monday he has talked with team officials regarding the job currently held by Jeff Bower. Bower will depart following the NBA draft June 26 to become an assistant coach at Penn State.

"I have spoken with members of the organization," Bristow said from his home in Marco Island, Fla., "but they gave me no timetable as far as when they were going to hire somebody. I am delighted to be a candidate, but it's really difficult for me to say any more because of the way they like to keep things under wrap."

Bristow and Bob Bass, Hornets executive vice president of basketball operations, are close friends dating back to their days with the ABA's San Antonio Spurs prior to the ABA/NBA merger. Bristow played for the Spurs while Bass held various positions from coach to assistant to general manager.

Bass declined Monday to confirm Bristow's candidacy or elaborate on other possible candidates.

"I can't say anything about it right now," Bass said. "I'd rather not comment on something that's speculation."

The Hornets' search for a head coach remains unfinished. The team has held preliminary interviews with finalists Mike Fratello, Brian Hill and Tim Floyd, but has yet to schedule a second round of talks.

Bristow, who will be 52 in August, returned to the United States on Sunday night after giving a week-long basketball clinic in Grenada, under the auspices of the NBA. Bristow said he spoke with members of the Hornets organization earlier this month.

He was the Hornets' head coach from 1991-96, finishing with a 207-203 (.505) record that included playoff appearances in 1992-93 and 1994-95.

Bristow said he left the Hornets on good terms with Bass. Bass coaxed Bristow into joining the Hornets organization in 1995 following a year away from basketball, and with majority owner George Shinn.

Other than a brief flirtation as a possible candidate last month to become head coach at his alma mater, Virginia Tech, Bristow has been out of coaching. He said Monday he has done some scouting.

Bristow also said he had "a general outline" of the way the general manager currently functions in the Hornets organization, overseeing scouting and the NBA draft, but having little input into personnel decisions that are left to Bass.

yeah he must be nuts if he wants to go work for ShinnRidge. Hell it was bad enough when he had only Shinn to put up with.

I always liked Bristow. I thought he got a bum deal when they canned him.
