    Nichols Coming To Alias

Rachel Nichols (The Inside) has joined the cast of Alias for its upcoming fifth season, the ABC network announced. In a press release, the network said that Nichols will play Rachel Gibson, a technical analyst working for a black ops division of the CIA. It is likely the character will become the previously announced protege of Sydney Bristow, played by Jennifer Garner, whose pregnancy will be written into the show.

In addition to a starring role on the dark procedural drama The Inside, Nichols appeared in The Amityville Horror with Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George (who played Lauren Reed in the third season of Alias). The season premiere of Alias will air Thursday, Sept. 29, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

I'll let y'all handle the more risque stuff...

    Alias' Sydney Will Be Pregnant

Stephen McPherson, president of ABC entertainment, told reporters that Alias star Jennifer Garner's pregnancy will be written into the show next season. "We are going to embrace the fact that she's pregnant," he said in a session at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif. "We're adding some characters to give her some new dynamics and some relationships to play off of. In terms of the actual creative [side], the show runners this year and [creator J.J. Abrams] are really focused on how to do that and how to make it realistic and not campy. There are certainly some fun examples of how she can embrace that in the line of work she does. But we also don't want to put her in situations where she's endangering herself and the baby, so there's this suspension of disbelief that, I think, won't take place then."

McPherson also said that there will be "some very, very big changes" coming to the show early in the season which are tangentially related to the pregnancy. Since Garner will be limited in the kinds of action scenes she can do, the show will be adding a younger character who will become Sydney Bristow's protege. "Some of [the changes] we will get from characters that we're adding," McPherson said. "She's going to get to be mentoring a younger agent and you'll be able to get some of that maybe sex appeal, if you will, in different places. But I think you're going to see a really interesting and dynamic Jennifer in that role."

Even with the changes, the show will continue to explore the world of international espionage and tell the same kinds of stories it has for the past four years. "J.J. is a master at this stuff," he said. "I love the fact that he's embracing it. I think it would be a mistake to hide it. He has some great ideas about how we're going to kind of play out that story through the year." Alias will return in the fall in a new timeslot on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - French actress Elodie Bouchez is joining the cast of ABC's spy drama "Alias."

She will play Zoe Rienne, an internationally wanted criminal who, unbeknownst to Sydney (Jennifer Garner), has been secretly working with Vaughn (Michael Vartan) for several years. The fifth season premieres at 8 p.m. Sept. 29.

Bouchez has won two Cesar Awards -- France's top film honors -- for her roles in the films "Wild Reeds" and "The Dreamlife of Angels," the latter of which also earned her best actress honors at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival.

    Alias Begins Production

ABC's Alias began production in Los Angeles on its upcoming fifth season, the network announced on Aug. 3. The new season will pick up the cliffhanger of last year, which ended with a shocking revelation by Vaughn (Michael Vartan) to Sydney (Jennifer Garner) and a sudden car crash.

Here's how ABC describes the upcoming season: "After they both survive the crash, [Sydney] learns that the man she has known as Michael Vaughn is under investigation and suspected of being a double agent. She questions whether their business and personal relationship over the years had all been a lie. When Sydney discovers that she is pregnant with Vaughn's baby, she is determined to uncover the truth about him. Meanwhile, because of Jack's [Victor Garber] past betrayal by Irina [Lena Olin], he begins to worry that his daughter may suffer the same fate as he did. He will also have to deal with the fact that he will soon become a grandfather, while still learning how to be a dad. Sloane [Ron Rifkin] will have to do some soul-searching of his own, as he makes an unholy alliance in his desperate fight to find a cure for Nadia [Mia Maestro], who is still in a coma."

As previously announced, new regular cast members will include Rachel Nichols (The Inside) as Rachel Gibson and Élodie Bouchez as Renée Rienne.

Alias returns on Sept. 29 in its new 8 p.m. ET/PT Thursday timeslot. [IMG]

    This isn't surprising....

    Garner To Quit Alias?

The Insider Web site is reporting a rumor that Jennifer Garner may quit as the star of ABC's spy series Alias next season. Citing an anonymous source, the site reported that "Garner has made it clear that she probably won't be returning to the show next year for a sixth season."

Garner recently married boyfriend Ben Affleck and is pregnant with their child, a pregnancy that will be written into Alias' upcoming fifth-season storylines. The site reported that producers are betting on this season's new co-star, Rachel Nichols, to replace Garner eventually. Nichols will play a new spy being trained by Garner in the upcoming season.

Garner's representatives declined to comment on the rumor to The Insider, and a representative for the show told the site: "I haven't heard that, so I can't confirm that."

    Alias' New Members Revealed

Rachel Nichols, whose butt-kicking agent, Rachel Gibson, will become the youngest member of the Alias team in the fall, will tread Sydney Bristow's path, executive producer Jeff Pinkner told TV Guide Online. "She joins the team early in the season, but they don't actively set out to recruit her," Pinkner told the site. "And if I were to tell you much more, it would give away the fun of meeting her character." But introducing Nichols (The Inside) will "show how you [create] a superagent like Sydney Bristow [Jennifer Garner]," Pinkner said. "She doesn't have the skills Sydney has, but she will need to acquire them over the course of the season."

Nichols is one of three new characters signing onto Alias. French actress Élodie Bouchez will play a cohort from Vaughn's shady past. "She and Vaughn share a history," Pinkner said. "And in our season finale we started to tease the audience with what that history is and what secrets Vaughn has been keeping from Sydney. We knew there would be another player in that story, and [Bouchez] plays that role."

Balthazar Getty joins the show as Thomas Grace, a rough APO agent.

The new season picks up immediately after the car crash of last season's finale. The question of Vaughn's true identity and what else he was going to tell Syd "will be answered in the first episode—or most of it will be," Pinkner said. "The consequences reveal a new enemy who is far more pervasive and dangerous and mysterious than any we have fought before."
