Says he's gonna leave Utah early. Thinks he's a first round pick.

I can understand wanting to declare when you are "hot". And Utah as a team and Alex as a QB may never be hotter....

But Round 1? No. Not gonna happen.

Not the best QB crop though, looking strictly at seniors, I don't see a first rounder. That Akron kid is getting some hype, then their are guys like Campbell who has some measurables but only one big year.

I saw the Akron kid (Frye?) 3 times this year and I STILL don't get it. I'd rather have Gradkowski from Toledo. I think he's a junior though.

Maybe Smith fools me  , but I don't see how running that spread O will get him anywhere at the next level.

Great college QB though. I want to be sure and say that. Meyer owes him a cut of that Florida money. And maybe he should send a little to Josh Harris too.

Its not a pro system. Doesn't mean a guy with pro skills can't translate.

I don't think he's a top 10 pick, but I didn't think Harrington, Rivers, Grossman, etc were either. But he did petition the competition committee. I don't think they told him 4th round and he came out anyway.

He's shown some athteticism and mobility, an ability to read, throw accurately from the pocket and on the run. He's 6'4 and can probably get some muscle on that frame. And he's productive.

Hell, I've seen guys with less get picked higher.

Speaking of Meyer and the spread, how do you see Leak working out with it? Seems to fit his skill set. Leak doesn't seem to be a guy with tons of mobility, or a cannon arm, but a little bit of both.

He better hit the weights, cause he'll take a pounding.

Smith's allright. It's the right decision. Had his degree already, and got a year's worth of Master's work in already. Assuming it's not thesis-based, he could easily finish it in spare time, and he could also get out of Utah rather than laboring with a new coach.

He's a Brady - smart, just enough to do what's necessary that he can get by in the right system. Problem is, a Brady gets lucky and has a Bellichick defense and Weis mastering an offense, not to mention a 3 deep depth chart everywhere and guys like Corey Dillon clamoring to come play for nothing.

Getting picked by SF at the top of two makes him a Dorsey, not a Brady. There are plenty of those, and they flame out quick. Or he could labor as a Weinke.
Honestly, his best chance given his skill set is to luck into a position where they think he's smart enough to be a #2 immediately.

Smith has something, I don't know what it is, but something that makes me think he will have a good NFL career after he sits back and learns for a few years. He's got the head for it, I think he just needs to learn an NFL offense.

Missed this earlier...sorry. But you are right that Leak had better bulk up.

Go back and look at the size of Smith at Utah and the Harris kid Meyer had at Bowling Green. Harris, especially, was THICK. Meyer loves to run that misdirection play where the QB sticks the ball in the RB's gut while everyone goes one way..... then the QB pulls it out and takes off running the other way.

Leak might get killed running that play in the SEC. It would seem to me that his mobility is more suited to buying time in the backfield as opposed to running plays like that one. Maybe I'm wrong....and Meyer IS supposed to be a good coach - so maybe he's already figuring it out. Dunno.
