Mike Rumph the latest Miami Hurricane player to run afoul of the law

By Marissa Silvera and David Cisneros
    Knight Ridder Newspapers

MIAMI — Former University of Miami football player Mike Rumph was arrested early Saturday on Miami Beach and charged with drunk driving.
Rumph is the second ex-Hurricane to be arrested in a week.
On Monday, Miami Shores police arrested Najeh Davenport, another player on last season’s national-champion squad, on burglary and criminal-mischief charges. He allegedly defecated in a Barry University student’s laundry basket in April.
Davenport, a running back who was drafted by the Green Bay Packers a few weeks after the alleged incident, bonded out and is awaiting an arraignment date. He can return to the Packers in the mean time.
Rumph, a 6-2, 205-pound cornerback, was drafted in the first round (27th overall) by the San Francisco 49ers in April. He has taken part in minicamps with San Francisco but has not signed a contract. He is scheduled to begin training camp with the team July 21.
Last month, UM recruit Nate Harris was arrested on armed-robbery charges.
‘‘It’s disappointing when any of our former athletes are involved with anything negative,’’ UM coach Larry Coker said when reached by phone Tuesday. ‘‘I wouldn’t think this would have a negative impact on the program. These are two isolated cases.’’
Former UM coach Butch Davis, who inherited a team on probation in 1995, is widely credited with cleaning up a program notorious for its run-ins with the law. Coker, Davis’ assistant head coach until taking over as the head coach last season, continued to run a clean ship.
But this spring and summer, Coker has had to deal with off-campus tragedy and crimes that affect the program because of the players’ ties to the school and the national attention.
In February, former linebacker Chris Campbell was legally drunk when he died in a one-car accident near the Coral Gables campus.
Coker said he had not talked to either Davenport or Rumph since they joined their pro teams. He had seen them working out at the Hurricanes’ facilities in the offseason.
Coker, who left for vacation early Tuesday, was unaware of Rumph’s arrest.
Rumph was stopped at the corner of Seventh Street and Euclid Avenue on South Beach at 4:20 a.m. after he ran several stop signs in a Cadillac Escalade, police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said.
Police said Rumph failed a field sobriety test and a breath test, but they could not confirm his blood-alcohol level.
According to NFL policy, Rumph likely will be fined by the league, which docks first-time, alcohol-related law offenders half of a regular-game salary, up to a maximum of $20,000, said league spokesperson Greg Aiello. He might be required to enter a league substance-abuse program.
Rumph did not return phone calls Tuesday.
