Charlotte locked up commitment No. 2 in as many days with Charles Dewhurst today, a 6-5 shooter from Charlotte Latin.

He'll have to have enough talent to get into the game first. At 175 pounds, I don't see him doing much early on other than helping the team GPA.

That's the part I like. We need to keep more of the local guys in Charlotte. Even if they aren't the best player, staying in Charlotte will help us with other possible local recruits in the future.

Charlotte Latin star to take talent to 49ers in '06.

This kid is better than I thought...

    Dewhurst stays

Charlotte Latin's Charles Dewhurst said he chose to play college basketball at Charlotte next season because of coach Bobby Lutz and his staff.

"They were the first school to offer me a scholarship and they recruited me the hardest," Dewhurst said Thursday after picking Charlotte over James Madison, Richmond and South Carolina.

"I had a certain comfort level with Charlotte that I didn't have with the other schools, so I feel pretty good about my decision."

Dewhurst, a 6-foot-6 senior, averaged 20.6 points and nine rebounds for Latin (23-8), which reached the N.C. Independent Schools 3A semifinals last season. The 3A class is the largest for the state's private schools.

Dewhurst's teams won state titles in 2003 and 2004, and his career record at Latin is 71-13.

National recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons rates Dewhurst 122nd nationally and among the top five seniors in North Carolina.

"With Charles, I think the best is yet to be," Gibbons said. "He really understands the game and he's a tremendous shooter.

"I see him as a sort of taller version of (former Charlotte star) Jobey Thomas, and maybe better as a high school player."

Dewhurst said Charlotte coaches expect him to play shooting guard. Dewhurst, who plays mostly inside for Latin, made 33 percent of his 3-pointers and 53 percent of his field-goal attempts.

"They want me to become more a catch-and-shoot guy, somewhat similar to Jobey," Dewhurst said.

"I know with my high school team that hasn't been my role, but I think they can develop me into a player like that."

    • Dewhurst is the third player in the 2006 class to commit to Charlotte. Junior-college point guard Carlos Williams, a preseason All-American, and 6-6 swingman Cameron Tatum of Tucker, Ga., also have committed. Gibbons ranks Tatum 131st nationally.

    • The 49ers have gotten commitments from two players from the Class of 2007: Lenoir Patterson School's Kenyan Harmon and Oak Hill (Va.) Academy's Michael Beasley.

Gibbons ranks Beasley the No. 1 prospect in that class, Harmon 92nd. He said he likes the talent coming to Charlotte the next two years.

"Bobby Lutz and his staff are getting it done early," Gibbons said.

    Damn,

Finally a good recruiting piece from the Observer.

Im thinking that we're gonna be so thankful we got Tatum and Dewhurst. These are 4 year guys who have a chance to make a mark with the program the way Jobey & Withers have. You have to have these guys to go along with the short stay phenoms like Beasely, etc.

    Very happy about this commitment.
