How do you explain that the lineages in Matthew and Luke are different?

If Adam didn't sin, or sin has always been in the world then Jesus died for nothing.

Rom 5:12 says "Therefore, as sin came into the world through one man and death as a result of sin, so death spread to all men, because all men sinned.

The next verse gives credence to your claim about there is no sin without knowledge. It says that where there is no law, sin isn't charged to their account.

It goes on to say that Adam was a type of the one to come(Jesus) then
vs.15 says "For if many died through one man's falling away, much more profusely did God's grace and the free gift that comes through the undeserved favor of the one man Jesus Christ, abound and overflow to many"

One is giving the lineage of Mary, and the other is giving the lineage of Joseph. Both of which were descendants of David.

That's weird. They both end with Joseph

You got me. I remember some Messianic Jewish teacher talking about it one time, and that Luke spent a lot of time with Mary at some point and that's how he got such detailed info about her before Jesus' birth. He had a reasonable explanation but I don't recall it.

The reality is there is absolutely no evidence in the Bible to support that view.

And here is another reality. Whether or not Genesis and these geneologies are absolutely correct is irrelevant. There is one thing and one thing alone that can shake the foundation of the Christian religion and that would be proving Christ was not resurrected.

regarding the point of selectivity... how do you decide which parts to believe in? is it just the parts that feel right?

I personally don't feel I am being selective. I think there are elements of truth in every part of the Bible. To me it is irrelevant if it is EXACTLY right. Except of course for the resurrection. If that is not exactly right, there is a problem.

I think that is what most people do. It's not a problem when argueing meaningless points like geneologies, but it is sad when you see people take the word and use it to justify racism, or abuse of any kind.

Yeah, that's the tricky one. I hope that my struggle with that doesn't make me less of a Christian.
