The two new divisions for an expanded Atlantic Coast Conference are in the works, said a source close to the discussions, and one possible setup looks like this:

    • Miami, Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland and North Carolina in one division.

    • Florida State, Clemson, N.C. State, Syracuse, Virginia and Wake Forest in the other.

In football, each team would play the five other members of its division annually, as well as a team that is predetermined as its rival in the opposite division -- in UM's case, Florida State. Each team also would play two other opponents in the opposite division, rotating those two teams annually.

Not a bad balance, but I'll get serious about it when expansion actually occurs.

I still think expansion is a bad idea, but making lemonade out of it - how about this idea.

Bring back the Big 4 tournament - maybe over Christmas. Duke's rival is Wake and Carolina's is State - so have those 2 groups play the first night and then flip flop them for the second night. You could go winners play each other, but that means that Duke-UNC or Wake-State could play each other 3 times. It would draw pretty good and would be much better than that stoooopid ass Tournament of shitty teams - I mean Champions - that they have every year.

I'm still on the fence as to why it's necessary to totally destroy one conference in order to produce a super conference to begin with. Seems unnecessary to me.

I know I know, TV $$$. But why pillage the Big East to accomplish it?

Proposed permanent non-division rivals in this division scenario:

    Duke-Wake
    UNC-State
    Maryland-Virginia
    Ga Tech-Clemson
    Miami-FSU
    BC-Syracuse

These teams would play once a year in football and twice in basketball. Now, it said that teams would play each division rival in basketball twice a season, plus their nondivision rival twice (12 games, and the other 5 teams in their division once. Guess what? That amounts to 17 games! I would guess teams would play two teams out of the division home-and-home in basketball to make it an 18-game conference schedule.

So here's my proposed home-and-homes out of the division in basketball:

    Duke--Wake, State
    UNC--Wake, State
    Maryland--Virginia, Clemson
    Ga Tech--Clemson, FSU
    Miami--FSU, Syracuse
    BC--Syracuse, Virginia

    NCSU--Duke, UNC
    Wake--Duke, UNC
    Virginia--Maryland, BC
    Clemson--Ga Tech, Maryland
    FSU--Miami, Ga Tech
    Syracuse--BC, Miami

Play your division twice. Play the other division once. That's 16 games. End of story.

Latest I heard this afternoon is that there is a new proposal that has no divisonal split for basketball or any other sport except for football. 18 game hoops schedule. 2 game sets rotate yearly except for designated "rival games" eg. Duke/UNC, Duke/MD, MD/UVa, etc.

This proposal is to get Duke to vote for expansion. They appear to be THE swing vote. UVa has it's hands tied politically and UNC is, well, UNC.
