It was a very good showing in fact. The attendance was 38,582 which is the highest the bowl has ever had by more than 3K which is very good considering the game last year was between a ranked Cincinnati team and a Southern Miss team that isn't that far away (3 and a half hours approximately). I agree that both schools did a good job bringing people. Rutgers looked to have 4-5K which is great for a New Jersey school playing in an Alabama bowl. I'm guessing NCSU brought 15-16K.

BTW, that stadium is in an armpit of a place but it was cool that you walked in right beside the field to get to your seats. Heck, from our parking spot ($5 for that spot) to our seat was only a couple hundred feet.

And yes, with a healthy Wilson, we blow them out in the second half. Fun game overall even with the loss!

I went a couple years ago when ECU played USF in the first papajohns.com bowl. The stadium is a dump and it is right in the middle of the ghetto. When we drove up to the stadium it reminded me of a huge erector set.

"Bowl officials estimated that 9,000 to 10,000 N.C. State fans bought tickets as the game achieved a record attendance of 38,582 in its third year."

    4. The ACC will emerge as the nation's toughest conference. Don't laugh. While the league has largely been a punch-line in recent years (its 1-9 record BCS games is a primary reason), the 2008 season was so competitive week-in, week-out that 10 of the 12 teams finished within a game of each other in the final standings. Unfortunately, such parity also buried their teams in the national rankings. Next year, expect Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and North Carolina to become mainstays in the Top 25, along with marked improvement by Boston College, Miami, Florida State and N.C. State.

Based on an article from Dec. 23rd (6 days before the bowl) in the Birmingham newspaper, here were the numbers at that time: "From their allotments of 10,000 tickets, Rutgers has returned 3,000 to the bowl and N.C. State plans to send back 1,500 for the Dec. 29 game at Legion Field. " and "Another 2,000 N.C. State fans have purchased tickets directly through the Papajohns.com Bowl, according to Kerr, whose estimate was based on ZIP codes from North Carolina. " So, not sure where your quotes came from but they already underestimated the crowd by 500-1500 based on what Bowl officials were reporting almost a week before the game.

So, the official attendance was 38,500. The local news had a bowl official that said 19K tickets were bought by locals. Rutgers at best brought 7K based on what they returned in their allotment. Thus, there are 12K that would make sense to be NCSU. There were 8500 in the Wolfpack Club and lclefty can confirm there were definitely a good 4K Wolfpack fans on the other side of the field which were bought directly from the bowl which starts to add up to the 38,500 number. If they had already sold 2K in NC zip codes 6 days before the bowl, it would be reasonable that you would pick up another 2K from incremental sales in NC in those 6 days as well as NCSU fans out of state.

.....Nice! Hey Wolfdaddy, thanks for your support. We had a very good season. Yes, losing to Md. and BC when we should not have, chapped our ass, and winning at home vs. ECU was exciting. The margin of victory over UNC was no way expected, but we'll take it.
NCSU lost to S. Fla. who had an awesome QB, and we also struggled against WM who has the conference mvp QB. Call it what you want, but our D could not stop a good pass game. JMO. GO PACK! Happy New Year! Fishman
