SPORTS PEOPLE: COLLEGE BASKETBALL; Big East Wants Out

    • Published: June 11, 1991

The Big East intends to withdraw a year early from an early-season basketball series with the Atlantic Coast Conference, according to Mike Tranghese, the Big East commissioner.
The four-year contract between the conferences and ESPN, which televises the eight-game annual series, is to run through the 1992-93 season. But because of scheduling conflicts and increased opposition from Big East officials, the A.C.C.-Big East Challenge could conclude with this year's games, scheduled for Dec. 2-5.
MIKE SOLTYS, ESPN's manager of programming information, said he not been informed of any change in plans by the Big East. He declined to speculate on what the cable network's response might be to such a request. A key factor in the Big East's unhappiness with the series is a new National Collegiate Athletic Association rule mandating that, beginning in 1992, the basketball season start no sooner than Dec. 1.
Given the N.C.A.A.'s new calendar, continuation of the series thus would virtually assure starting the 1992-93 season with stiff competition, stiffer than some coaches prefer. ESPN paid a reported $7 million for a projected 32 games.

I agree. An ACC-SEC or ACC-Big 12 matchup might be kind of cool.

in lieu of an actual challenge, the big east has been beating the snot out of the ACC in the ncca tournament. 7-2 BE the last five years. better record, more titles, better players. it really isn't close.

How'd those ranked Villanova pussies do against NCSU a few days ago ?
Yep, they fucking lost, and don't go crying about the refs, either.

The announcer just sumed it up "one team is doing everything right and the other team can't do anything right."
