Putt, here's a URL for Silas - http://www.nba.com/coachfile/paul_silas/?nav=page - but I believe the "background" for Houston is wrong - believe it should have been the Clips, not the Rockets. Heck, it's only NBA.com...

He made the playoffs each FULL year coaching the Hornets, and after taking over for Cowens, fell one game short.

Considering the "star" coaches that would be out there, I'd take him in a minute.

    1981 Houston 17 65 .207 0 0 .000

    1982 Houston 25 57 .305 0 0 .000

    1998 Charlotte 22 13 .629 0 0 .000

    1999 Charlotte 49 33 .598 1 3 .250

    2000 Charlotte 46 36 .561 6 4 .600

    2001 Charlotte 44 38 .537 4 5 .444

    2002 New Orleans 47 35 .573 2 4 .333

    TOTALS 286 -323 .470 13 16 .448

Out of curiosity--is a under 500 coach the norm in the NBA ?---and as far as making the playoffs--don't they take all but the bottom teams anyway ?

I don't care if he coaches the Bobcats or not but I keep hearing how great he is and the stats don't show it. Especially his post season record.

Putt, when Silas was coaching the Clippers, they had no talent. Let's compare Silas's average over the last 4 years, vs. that of coaches still in the playoffs:

    Larry Brown - Reg. 60% Playoffs 52%
    Rick Carlisle - Reg 61% Playoffs 47%
    Byron Scott - Reg 51% Playoffs 59%
    Jim O'Brien - Reg 59% Playoffs 57%
    Phil Jackson - Reg 70% Playoffs 75%
    Greg Poppo - Reg 64% Playoffs 50%
    Rick Adelman-Reg 67% Playoffs 56%
    Don Nelson - Reg 64% Playoffs 48%
    Paul Silas - Reg 57% Playoffs 45%

While Paul would be currently last in playoff percentage, Don Nelson and Rick Carlisle will probably catch him, unless they advance to the conference finals with little difficulty. Overall regular season percentage isn't bad - considering these are the playoff coaches - not the coaches that missed the playoffs - and I doubt we'd find a better one that's currently unemployed.

So, an option for coach is someone with numbers competitive with the coaches remaining in the playoffs. The point will probably be moot, as I'll bet the Raptors sign him - or Cleveland will.

    I'd take Van Gundy, too...

Okay--I see your point. Thats the first time I have seen how Silas stacks up against the other ones.

Me and Excel are buds. For you, Putt, not a problem.

As long as half time entertainment includes "pin the tail on VOR"...

i like silas. it'd be great if he landed the head coaching job in Charlotte. i'd be more worried about MJ wanting to run things, tho. he has a bad track record with running a team.

Agreed Nut...MJ could be Sr. VP in charge of putting butts in the seats...

    But, no association with personnel.

Well, 'cept for the new "cheerleaders"...wonder what the SnakeCharmers are doing after the Cobras are done gettin' boned by a Mongoose?

fwiw, i'd venture to say that silas has had the toughest coaching job of the aforementioned coaches- he had a lot of adversity that was thrown at him that many coaches would have had a meltdown with. and dont forget- the owners mentality on a franchise does alter a coaches ability. look at don nelson in golden state and don nelson in dallas- with a owner who writes the checks and has winning as his number 1 priority- nelly is one of the tops in the league again. silas had owners who were happy to get by and get a 500 record, that mentality probably shaped silas a bit in his stint with the hornets.
