I decided to put this in here instead of R&R because I figured it would be more appreciated.

Why the fuck do game designers build games based on architecture for cards that do not even exist yet, or that are a year or more ahead of the time of the release of the game!?

I was playing FarCry last night on a 3.4GHz machine, 2Gb RAM, with a 10k rpm SATA HDD, and an ATI 9800 XT video card. The game is over a year old and I STILL could only run it at 1024x768x32 without it getting jumpy on me.

I understand the whole idea of "keeping up with technology" but they need to be more realistic and stick with what's available at the time on the market.

I run it full bore on my laptop without a problem. May need to update your drivers. But I'm sure you knew that.

Sorry, but I find that impossible.

I would have to see that to believe it.

    You're running at 1600x1200x32, high quality....on a laptop?

Sure. May not have been 1600X1200 since I'm using widescreen but I'll check when I find my disk.

It is 1680X1050X32. Full Bore is 1920X1200X32 which I have't tried yet.

Resolution isnt the only consideration. I'm running all of my games at 1680x1050 (wide), but I turn of AA and my refresh is 60 Hz. (FYI - this setting looks awesome).

The simple answer is that they do it to increase longevity of the engine. The designers make a tremendnus amount of money by licensing the engine, so it needs to be very forward thinking or it will be supplanted by the latest & greatest.

What in the hell sort of laptop do you have? Alienware or something like that...

Far Cry to me is just a tad bloated in that I have a similar machine to Krack and I cannot run that game. Sad because the graphics are steller, but the frame rates reminded me up Sublogic Flight Simulator on my old Commodore.

Again, I ran farcry on my athlon 2600 with a GF4 Ti4400 and achieved very playable framerates.

Of course I didnt have any DX9 features enabled because the GF4 is a DX8 card. My GF 6800 doesnt achieve much better frame rates, but I get the DX9 effects. My guess is the laptop is the same - DX8 hardware doing an admirable job of rendering what it knows how to render.

It's a Dell XPS. When I got it I did a little research and it was far better than the alienware machines at the time. The only problem is that the damn thing weighs 10 lbs. Here is the comparison if anyone cares:

    You've lost your mind.

and I suppose "playable" is very subjective.
