Panthers | Foster Not Close - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
23:49 PT: Steve Reed reports for the Gaston Gazette the Carolina Panthers do not appear to be close to a contract agreement with second-round draft pick, RB DeShaun Foster. The Panthers and Foster’s agent, David Dunn, remain far away from a deal. "Right now we’re not close to a deal with DeShaun, but that can all change with one phone call," Panthers GM Marty Hurney said.

Panthers | Fasani Close? - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
23:47 PT: Steve Reed reports for the Gaston Gazette the Carolina Panthers appear to be close to reaching a contract agreement with fifth-round draft pick, QB Randy Fasani. Fasani’s agent, Steve Baker, said Monday that "I would expect that we will have something done by tomorrow."

Panthers | More On Peppers - posted at KFFL (http://nfl.kffl.com)
23:45 PT: Updating an earlier story, Steve Reed reports for the Gaston Gazette the contract signed by DE Julius Peppers with the Carolina Panthers is reportedly a seven-year contract that could pay him more than $55 million, according to league sources. He will receive $13 million in guaranteed signing bonuses spread out over two seasons. Peppers’ deal will not void out after four seasons if he reaches certain incentives.

I have a feeling Foster is going to be a BIG problem. He thinks he was a mid-first rounder, just because he was projected as such. And I am thinking he wants paid based on that projection.
Then again, he's probably used to making more money than his second round contract would bring?

I don't see Foster as being a hold out at all. He wants to get into camp and the team wants him there. I think it's better that we pay him like a 1st rounder now rather than have issues later that he's not making what he should. A year or two later, where he was drafted won't be factor, he will be a feature back and hopefully a top 10 to 15 back in this league. His contract now should reflect that, IMO.

No worries. Foster will be signed when camp opens.

Is that right? I thought the bonus would be spread out over the entire length of the contract.

I think he means that the bonus will be paid over two seasons.

Maybe the 13 mil comes up in years 6 and 7 and at the end of Peppers' 5th year we can trade him to Miami for a first round pick and some ol' reserve DE (Jay Williams???).

for cap concerns the bonus is spread out. For Julius, he gets a big check this year and a big one next year, I believe.

Holy cow! If that’s the case he is going to get a GIGANTIC check next year since we will be so restricted this year. That would definitely be a very clear signal to Gilbert that he is not going to be in a Panther uni next year and I imagine he won’t be the only overpaid guy who will have to clear out for Peppers . . . who else?

I don't think you get it.

This is hypothetical, but if the bonus was split in two payments of say $9 million and $4 million, it would look like this on the salary cap:

$1.285 million the first year, $1.952 million the next 6.

This would save us about a half million on the rookie cap this year, and help get Foster signed, but wouldn't be any more of a reason to cut Giblet than we already have.
