Emory & Henry takes 97 3-point shots and Guilford only took 2. That is some dispcipline not to shoot the long ball when the other team is.

Guilford 147, Emory & Henry 136, that score once again, Guilford 147, Emory & Henry 136
By Bill Hass, Staff Writer, Greensboro News & Record

It looked like a score from the heyday of the American Basketball Association.

    Guilford 147, Emory & Henry 136.

But it was no misprint. The Quakers survived a road test Wednesday night against the frenetic style E&H calls "Fun and Gun."

"That was ridiculous," said Guilford point guard Caleb Kimbrough. "If they didn't get a shot up in five or six seconds, they'd launch a wild 3 from 3 or 4 feet behind the line."

The game produced some startling statistics. The Wasps fired 97 3-point shots, hitting 30, and took 32 other shots to total 129 for the game. Guilford only took 80, but made 53 (66.2 percent).

The Quakers set school records for points (the old record was 125), free throws made (41, old record was 40) and points by two teams (283, shattering the record of 227).

Emory & Henry's style is the one used by Grinnell, a Division III school in Iowa that attracted national attention last season. It calls for a full-court press that traps the first pass inbounds. Whether the Wasps get a turnover or not, they take their shot, usually a 3-pointer, within eight seconds of the start of each of their possessions.

"We prepped as much as you can for something like that," said Guilford coach Tom Palombo. "The thing is to get more baskets than turnovers, and we did. We handled the ball well, for the most part."

The Quakers had 31 turnovers, five by Kimbrough, who said he got over his nervousness about the press in the first few minutes.

Besides, the Quakers found that beating the pressure led to layups and dunks. Palombo said only one of his team's 53 baskets came outside the paint.

"Whatever style you believe in," Palombo said of the strategy. "There's no right way and no wrong way. Guys had fun and enjoyed the game. And it's a lot more fun if you win."

The pace takes a physical toll. The Wasps substitute in waves of five players every two minutes. Guilford used 11 players, which is the Quakers' norm, although Palombo often played four guards at the same time.

"I'm exhausted," said Kimbrough, who played 26? minutes, more than any other Quaker. "Right after the game, I was ready to pass out on the bus."

The game was the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams and left Guilford 3-1 overall and the Wasps 2-3.

The rematch at Guilford is Jan. 18.

It would be a blur, going up and down the court. Maybe Lutz should play this way, he would be busy subbing instead of arguing with the officials. I can't believe Guilford only took 2 three-point attempts. Emory & Henry has averaged 130.6 ppg in 5 games (but given up 133.2 ppg). Their average number of 3-pointers per game is 23 of 74 (.310). Unbelievably, the opposition is 5 of 26 (.192) beyond the arc in those 5 games.
