I thought it was pretty damn good. had you guessing until the last second.

for everybody who thinks it was a wasted episope I ask what could they have done? shoot ever single person on the show? phil got his, and short of the whole Soprano family getting shot who else was there? if they wanted to just kill everyone they could have done it in ten minutes....and nice rack on AJ's girlfriend

    Must ... keep ... head ... from ... exploding ...

cat = Reminder of the original group members who are deceased (possibly Chris, possibly Pussy depending your interpretation)

Jr. = Symbolic of Tony's controlling nature, as A.J. gets the job that Chris always wanted, while Chris was denied his desires. Also symbolizes the cyclical nature of the series where A.J. "moving on" and getting out of his rut actually meant returning to his previous shallow lifestyle.

Fed = Exemplified how people ostensibly opposed to the mobster lifestyle can become sucked into it even without obvious bribery or other forms of intent (also displayed by Dr. Melfi, who recognizes this and seeks to escape it).

Ending = The crystalized essence of the entire series, which was the psychology of sociopathy. The Sopranos was never intended to be just another mob story where this guy killed that guy, double-cross, head splatter, cue scene, cut. It was about the exploration of the mindset, and the last scene perfectly demonstrated that. Every moment was filled with the tension, stress, and uncertainty that is Tony's life. Maybe he got whacked and maybe he didn't, but that ambiguity is what the series was about. Think back to 9/11 when you'd walk around and wonder when the next attack was going to happen. Mob life is that way every minute of every day, so Tony either gets his just desserts with a bullet to the brains or he continues to live in purgatory where he lives the moment before his death for the rest of his life.

Sopranos /= Goodfellas, but I guess some only appreciate it on that level just as some only enjoy the Simpsons for the fart jokes.

    Ignore him. He's a clown.

There wasn't time for that stuff in a 1 hour final episode. Too many questions needed to be answered.

    I still miss Ralphie.

A clown who apparently understood all of the obvious stuff that you completely missed.

Just wasn't time for it in the final episode. If it was a 2 hour finale? Go for it. To each his own.

all of that was tying up stories. Tony forgave junior, the fed slept with the other agent to get info about Phil for Tony. AJ ended up being AJ, a spoiled loser with nothing in life but what his parents give him. I guess the cat was there to let Tony feel better about killing Christopher. Cats kill rats, and the cat was staring at his picture.

At first, I thought the ending meant tony dies due to the discussion he had with bobby on the boat that they showed twice. I now think it was just done to build tension. While it was the finale, the last few episodes built it up, so it can't be judged on just that one hour. It basically was a few hours long, just spread out over a few weeks.

Good points. I was just pissed with the ending...so I'm not willing to give the rest of the episode any credit. The week before was SO good.

Did Tony get whacked at the end? Maybe, maybe not . . .

I think David Chase left it open where 1) he can do a movie in another year or two or 2) pick up the story again in 5 years. He can always pick up the movie or Sopranos II from the moment Meadow walked in. He can have Tony get shot and then fast forward several months O-R he can catch the guy in the Members Only jacket and shot him first.

It would've been too easy to just have Tony die and end the series there.
