2021 Panther Draft Choices

If I were to rate QB's it would be:

Lawrence-Clemson QB, Watson, size, speed, huge arm, winner, etc. He could have issues like any other QB, but looks well above the others. Only one worth trading up for.

Wilson-Smaller school, made do with constant pressure and less of a supporting cast. Played a lot through pressure and has great escapability(if that is a word) Worry about small body in NFL.

Fields- Knock on OSU drops him to third. Tough kid, not sure how great a leader, great supporting cast, not sure about the one read knock.

T Lance - Seems to be a good athlete, big, strong arm, great deep ball. Negatives would be not much tape on him and the short intermediary parts on tape are limited. Might or might not fit our offensive scheme. We took a chance on a fantastic athlete in Cam who had little tape throwing the ball and it is a passing league.

Jones, Trask are just guys to me. Maybe good, but not great.

 

Wilson has a great arm, maybe even better than Lawrence's. But the competition and injury potential are red flags to be sure. As far as Fields, you need to judge the player, not the helmet. He holds on to the ball too long and had a couple of really bad outings against Indiana and Northwestern. Made some bizarre decisions in those games. He might have the highest ceiling, but he definitely needs to be coached up. He's my candidate for "guy who will be ruined if he goes to the Jets".

Mac Jones will probably be very successful in the NFL. He'll be taken late enough that he should go to a team with an offensive line and some talent in general. He's shown amazing decision making skills, and fast processing. Those will overcome mediocre arm strength.

 

Lance is still the one I want us to take if we do go for one in the draft.

Gives us free agency, the rest of the draft and the same again next year to get together some good protection for him, while he sits and learns behind Teddy if we keep him or whoever starts if he's traded away. Assuming we would sign a veteran placeholder if Teddy got traded out.

 

This is by far the most reasonable trek to take. For someone like me who likes to trade down more often than trade up, it certainly makes sense to keep our draft capital. The only holdup for me is his passing game. Cam could at one time throw the ball through a brick wall, but his accuracy was way off. He had less passing tape for his entire college career than most QB's have in their first 6 games. But, we rolled the dice.

Hoping our guys can work with Lance to make sure he has the touch and can make all the throws. He is a great kid from what I gather.

 

go back and look how little experience lance has had, and look at the very low competition he has faced. Could become the new standard for 1st round reaches. I can't think of a QB in modern draft history that would represent a bigger gamble with a top 10 pick, and I pray that scott fitterer is not this desperate with his first pick as GM. . . . would be a really really bad sign

 

There are just too many proven college talents in the draft at every position to risk on an unknown quality like Lance.
Considering that there are only 32 first round picks I wouldn't even consider him unless I had the luxury of sitting him for 2 or 3 years.

 

Daniel Jeremiah has him above Fields.

 

maybe that should be taken as the possibility that only Lawrence and your BYU guy are worthy of spending a top 10 pick on then

The fact that so many "talking heads" have the opinion that 3 or 4 QBs could go in the top 8 or 9 picks definitely does not count as some sort of proof that those picks would be wise.
It says more to me that "popular opinion" leans towards BAD or desperate (AND bad) franchises rolling the dice on a much needed franchise quarterback that will rescue their shitty teams and save their jobs!
I think it was B&B that stated recently "BAD TEAMS STAY BAD" and in those first 8 or 9 picks we will all get a very good indication of exactly who those BAD teams will continue to be

 

Not sure about trading up a bunch of picks for a rookie. How many times have rookie QBs failed miserably

 

Lance is #11 on his board and Fields is #12. Mac Jones is on there too, down at #34. Wilson is all the way up at #4.
