I haven't paid any attention to Eifert, so I can't say whether he's any good, mainly because I didn't think the team needed a TE. However, if he's a Gronkowski/Jimmy Graham type of talent, you always add those kind of guys because they make your team better.

Panthers considering Eifert for first-round pick
While most of the pre-draft speculation has focused on the Panthers taking a defensive tackle with the 14th pick, they are also giving strong consideration to Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert, the Observer has learned.

The thinking is Carolina could pair Eifert with Greg Olsen in the two-tight end sets that were so effective for the Panthers in 2011 with Olsen and Jeremy Shockey.

At 6-5 and 250 pounds, Eifert looks the part of the new breed of pass-catching tight ends. He often split out wide at Notre Dame, and he ran the 40-yard dash at the combine in 4.68 seconds.

Eifert also bench-pressed 225 pounds 22 times in Indianapolis, and had a 35.5-inch vertical jump.

The Panthers have more pressing needs at defensive tackle and in the secondary, although first-year general manager Dave Gettleman is a believer in the “best player available” approach.

Since drafting Cam Newton No. 1 overall two years ago, coach Ron Rivera has talked repeatedly about surrounding the franchise quarterback with additional play-makers.

It's possible the Panthers could be using the Eifert buzz as a smokescreen.

There's also a chance Eifert won't be available to Carolina at 14. At least one draft expert -- the NFL Network's Mike Mayock -- has Eifert going to the Jets at 13.

How’s this for a shocker: Several execs picking early in round 1 believe OAK will take corner DJ Hayden 3rd overall if they keep the pick

I would love Eifert. Fits both the big guy and playmaker categories.

Been a big fan of his for awhile. Can split out like a wideout (Olsen) and is a much better blocker than Greg too.

Doesn't quite fit the need mold but I would love what it would mean for our O in the future. Cam needs a redzone target. It doesn't get much better than him.

Yeah, but by midseason you'd be loving it.

    1) Kansas City - Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan - Higher upside than Joeckel
    2) Jacksonville - Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU - better 4-3 fit than Jordan
    3) Arizona (trade w Oakland) - Luke Joeckel, OT, TAMU - Solid ten year starter
    4) Philadelphia - Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma - Athleticism makes him a fit for Chip Kelly
    5) Detroit - Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama - reminds me a lot of Revis
    6) Cleveland - Dion Jordan, OLB, Oregon - nice fit opposite Paul Kruger
    7) Oakland - Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah - one of my two favorite draftees with Milliner
    8) Buffalo - Jonathan Cooper, OG, UNC - why do draftniks not notice that Buffalo lost Andy Levitre?
    9) NY Jets - Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama - the Jets need to run the ball
    10) Tennessee - Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida - versatile and talented but not hugely productive
    11) San Diego - Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU - huge talent but hasn't put it together
    12) Miami - Xavier Rhodes, CB, FSU - they've addressed the offense in free agency, so the needs are on defense
    13) NY Jets - Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia - ridiculously overrated
    14) Carolina - Sylvester Williams, DT, UNC - Richardson can't play the nose
    15) New Orleans - Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia - better on the field than in workouts
    16) St. Louis - Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas - versatile and dependable player who makes a defense better
    17) Pittsburgh - Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame - similar to Heath Miller and will replace him
    18) Dallas - Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri - not a great player but helps Dallas switch to the 4-3
    19) NY Giants - Bjoern Warner, DE, FSU - the Giants do smart things and picking Warner this late would be brilliant
    20) San Francisco (trade with Chicago from #34) - Datone Jones, DE, UCLA - not a lot of pro ready 3-4 DEs in this draft
    21) Cincinnati - D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama - similar to Andre Smith but minus the headaches
    22) St. Louis - Cordarrelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee - a much better pro prospect than Tavon Austin
    23) Minnesota - Manti Te'o, LB, Notre Dame - he's a good player, forget everything else
    24) Indianapolis - Menelik Watson, OT, FSU - Andrew Luck was the 4th most sacked QB last season
    25) Minnesota - Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington - scrappy defender who will try to replace Antoine Winfield
    26) Jacksonville (from Green Bay) - Geno Smith, QB, WVU - not great but he should be better than Gabbert
    27) Houston - Robert Woods, WR, USC - how long have they looked for a starter opposite Andre Johnson?
    28) Denver - Tank Carradine, DE, FSU - replaces Elvis Dumervil
    29) Buffalo (from New England) - Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse - this makes more sense than taking him at #8
    30) Atlanta - D.J. Hayden, CB, Houston - they may move up to get him if they're scared he won't fall
    31) San Francisco - Jonathan Cyprien, S, FIU - replaces Dashon Goldson
    32) Baltimore - Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia - Baltimore isn't scared of character issues
