I'm a Sony shooter, and you can read all about any of that in the photo thread. Most are Canon or Nikon - I follow a different methodology if you haven't seen any of the various threads where people hate on Davidson for being too Henning.

Anyway, Canon or Nikon. It doesn't really matter. Couple things you'll want to do - read up great reviews on 2-3 year old bodies - anything that hit around 10mpix, don't go as low as 6mp. You should get a fairly cheap but good body. It'll come with a kit lens, which should be good enough to work with. And get a 50mm - you can get one used for almost nothing. After that it depends on what you're shooting.

Is a point and shoot good enough? They're cheap, convenient, small.
Or did you want a DSLR? How much does video matter to you?

Hurney's been here since 98. He's not a JFG. They're close, and I'm sure that helped make it all work, but in the end, it's baffling to suggest they don't evaluate Hurney based on his own work, that it's either both he and Fox or neither. Why would he not be evaluated on his merits? Alternately, why do some automatically assume he won't be here?

Mallett I'm not a big fan of. Hard to like that many of the spread guys other than McCoy.

I think automatically expecting a QB pick there would lead to heartbreak.

Which, I think we could get a solid 2nd round QB, but don't force a guy just to say it was done. I don't think we need a TE there but depending on how everything else worked out I'm not against anything else.
