Michael- I would tell the coach that you would like 15 minutes of quality time with them before practice begins. Then I would challenge them about being a "ball player" and what it will take. That you will do everything possible to help them achieve their goals, but they have to show you they want it. If the HC won't back you on this...there is nothing you can do. When he tells you, you have to earn it, this is where it begins
