Charlotte's Baldwin out with broken hand

    Senior forward Pigford suspended

    DAVID SCOTT

    STAFF WRITER

The news was not good Monday for the Charlotte 49ers as they begin 10 days of earlier-than usual preseason men's basketball practice.

Mitchell Baldwin, a favorite to be the team's starting point guard this season, will miss four-to-six weeks when a broken hand. And senior forward C.J. Pigford has been suspended indefinitely by coach Bobby Lutz for breaking team rules.

Baldwin broke his right hand playing in a pickup game prior to Sunday's first day of practice. The 49ers, who will play three exhibitions in Canada in October, are allowed 10 days of practice before the trip by the NCAA. Baldwin will miss most of Charlotte's preseason, but should be back in time for the season opener Nov. 19 against Long Beach State in Halton Arena.

Baldwin started four games for the 49ers last season, averaging 5.9 points and 1.9 assists.

49ers officials wouldn't say what Pigford's transgression was, but did say he is in good standing academically at Charlotte. He is still enrolled in school.

Pigford played at East Columbus High in eastern N.C. and came to Charlotte from Lon Morris (Texas) Community College. He was a key reserve for the 49ers last season, playing in all 30 games, averaging 3.5 points and 2.4 rebounds.

Pigford will be back 2nd semester. Mitchell's injury may help develop some depth in the preseason, just hope he's healed by December.

Just another chapter is the wonderful drama....

Pigford may have just blown his chance at a significant backup role at the forward positions for this team.

The Mitch injury worries me. This may give Coach Lutz the excuse he has been looking for to not start Mitch at the PG. I can hear it now, " Mitch was going to be our starting PG but injuries prevented his practice time."

Just don't put another 3-pt shooter @ the PG position and I'll be happy...

This may give Leemire Goldwire a chance to live up to the expectations he has received in the last month or so. He is supposedly the "Gem" of the recruiting class. So we may get a chance to find out early
