    actually, they'll have to cut back on roofs to afford insurance now, so it doesn't quite work the way you're thinking. This is ridiculous, I liked Thomas as a player back when I was a Chiefs fan, but anyone who is speeding and not wearing a seatbelt is responsible for his/her own injuries, imo.

    that or they'll have to jack up the price by 15K so they can afford the liability insurance...just like what has happened in the medical field.

    I'm surprised they don't sue the hospital as well because technically he didn't die from the wreck, but from a blood clot that formed and broke loose later on. I'm sure they can blame the hospital for that even though it is a high risk with long term immobility.

    The trouble is the legal system that allows people to win such suits as I'm sure his family will this one. It sets a precedent and there are far too many folks out there looking for a free ride so they don't have to get out and actually [GASP] work! Speeding on ice and no seatbelt - it's called suicide. Sorry, don't mean to disrespect Thomas, but people should use some common sense.

    What's sad is not the fact that cases like these make it to court...it's that attorneys convince twelve dumbasses to agree with them.

    i can't see GM being held responsible unless they did something overtly unsafe -- like a memo says "we should spend $.75 extra per car for this special thingy that keeps roofs from killing people" and then another memo says "nah, fuck that shit. let them die."

    i don't like people/companies being held responsible for things that aren't illegal/against code/etc. it's not like the auto industry is unregulated or anything. there are so many codes they need to follow that anything they do must have an implicit (if not explicit) seal of approval from the gov't. if the gov't failed to account for roofs, then oh well, lesson learned. maybe this suit will lead to a good standard for roofs. but it shouldn't lead to a dozen new millionaires.
