    Charlotte 49ers center Martin Iti has withdrawn his name from next week's NBA draft, only hours from Thursday's 5 p.m. deadline for players to inform the league.

    Iti, a 7-foot sophomore who averaged 6.0 points and 4.7 rebounds last season, announced in May that he would enter the draft as an underclassman. The league has a June 17 deadline for players to pull out of the draft and retain their college eligibility.

    "It's like we've just signed a good recruit," said 49ers coach Bobby Lutz. "I'm really happy for Martin. I think there was obviously some pressure there for him to go pro for some valid reasons. But I don't think he was ready. His experience in (last week's) Chicago draft camp enabled him to see that."

    I think he's gonna step it up this year and be a factor. Especially since we're playing in the lower level A-10.

    What zone are you in? Atlantic 10 competition doesn't begin until the 2005-2006 season.

    Iti wants to be ruled by UAB some more.

    He's 0-2 vs UAB in his NCAA career.

    UAB owns UNCC. They are our practice squad.
