Why do you think he got the job. The board of Regents has priorities, and keeping state and uncch at the top of the hill is job 1. Similar situation in florida. probably elsewhere as well.

    Mayor McCrory rocks!

These next three semesters can't go by fast enough - Woodward has to retire at the end of the Spring 2005 term. The search for the new chancellor begins next year. Maybe the new one won't be such a freakin' wuss.

Most UNC Charlotte students don't have a clue. They probably polled the students that wear Carolina and State stuff to class every damn day.

    All for the name change

I travel throughout the SouthEast US and we do not have a strong identity. I always have to explain who UNC Charlotte is and how it relates to where Michael Jordan played.

name change sounds good to me.

For the life of me don't see why anybody would be against it.

I think it comes under the heading of deception in job hiring, calling yourself a UNC grad rather than a UNCC grad is attractive to some. You know kind of in the if you can go to college go to state vein.

This is the kind of story that proves what those with a UNC Charlotte affection have known all along. Stolen from the other board but I don't think anyone there will mind at all...

Freshman year, I'm walking to the Prospector on Saturday for lunch with my roommate, this lady in a car stops us on Mary Alexander right next to the greenhouse looking confused and says:

Lady: "Excuse me, but can you tell me where the stadium is?"

Me: "Do you mean the Erricson Stadium? The Panthers play there, and have a game tomorrow at 1pm."

Lady: "Is it close by? There is supposed to be a game today that my nephew is playing in."

Me (confused): "Um... Well the stadium is downtown about 10-15min south of here, but there isn't a game today."

Lady: "My nephew said it was today and he'd be playing".

Me: "Well what team does he play for?"

    Lady: "Carolina"

I'm starting to piece the puzzle together, and already trying to compose myself.

Me: "You mean the Tar Heels?"

    Lady: "Yeah thats it!"

Me (trying as hard as I can not to laugh): "I'm sorry ma'am, the Tar Heels don't play in Charlotte, you are on the wrong campus and even wrong city. You are looking for UNC-Chapel Hill. You are about 2 hours southwest of where you need to be. The good news is all you have to do is take 85-40 to get there, the bad news is that I doubt you'll make it before the 3rd quarter begins. good luck."

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't been a part of the conversation myself

New name for UNCC? Why not honor founder?

In response to "Renaming UNCC would benefit city, McCrory says" (Dec. 16):

In the '60s, Charlotte College was enthusiastic and proud about taking on the name of the University of North Carolina. Now that the university has hit critical mass and become the system's third strong research campus, the mayor believes the name has outlived its usefulness and results in confusion of UNC Charlotte with other campuses.

"University of Charlotte" may avoid confusion between UNC Charlotte and UNC Chapel Hill (and, for that matter, UNC-Pembroke), but it fosters its own confusion with UCLA (that's University of Charlotte on 'Lizabeth Avenue, home campus of CPCC).

Moreover, the politics in Raleigh will never allow University of Charlotte.

May I suggest another possibility: Bonnie E. Cone University. Dr. Bonnie's work, more than any other, truly brought the university at Charlotte into being. What more appropriate name could there be?

    David Yarbrough
    Charlotte

New name helped 49ers, why not university?

As a UNC Charlotte student, I applaud Mayor McCrory for his proposed name change. The increased national recognition our athletic program has received as a result of its 2000 name change [to Charlotte] is staggering. The same can happen for the university!
