Hey Miner49er I also have a BS in Geography from UNCC, mine though is 2002. What line of work are you in in the Northeast? I'm just curious to see what a fellow geog major is doing. Thanks.

Hey Miner, looks like you were in the masters program when I was in undergrad.

    B.S. Geography '92

Glad to see someone is actually using their degree in the workplace.

I'm about to finish my Masters in City and Regional Planning from Rutgers in May, the geography program at UNCC prepared me so well for this planning program. I'm looking to stay in the Northeast to work, do you know any other Niners working in the area? Any info on planning jobs would be great as well.

The Deputy Director of Planning and Community Development for South Windsor, CT is a GGY grad from around 87.

Her husband is an architecture major from around the same time period and I have worked with both of them over the years.

I ran into a public administration intern in Burlington, CT but I didn't know UNC-Charlotte offers a degree in public administration unless he was a poli sci. major.

I also met a Windsor, CT resident who was a UNC-Charlotte grad in the Navy.

Hey, its not a far ride from Rutgers to Philly for all of those A-10 games. I'm assuming by your presence on the board that your allegience is torn between two schools/conferences.

My brother went to ASU (the AZ one) for graduate school but never stopped following the Niners either.

As far as Connecticut goes, your best bet is to look for an Assistant Town Planner or Regional Planner position with a Council of Governments like Metrolina in Charlotte. The GOGs have a heavy transportation bent to them so transportation skills are what they are typically looking for. I know a GGY grad that was able to land a job managing a small regional mass transit system after only a brief internship with a Town. She is now a Main Street Coordinator for a large town.

Stay away from Fairfield County (i.e. Greenwich, Stamford, etc.) unless you want to pay $1,000,000 for a starter home or commute an hour each way to live in a more affordable area. The salaries are significantly higher up here but the cost of living is even higher, especially housing, and taxes.

I took a CT job 15 years ago for 32K right out of Grad School when York County, SC was offering 18K. I thought "WHOO HOO" what a coup, until I found out that my tiny efficiency apartment cost twice as much as my two bedroom luxury apartment off Sharon Amity.

All told, its worth it. Imagine...

30 sec from W. class trout stream
    5 min from hiking
    10 min from skiing
30 min from W class kayaking
    45 min from the beach
1 hr from the worlds largest casino
    1 hr from Vermont
    2 hrs from NYC
    2 hrs from Boston
    2 hrs from the Catskills
    3 hrs from Maine
    3 hrs from the Adirondacks

Not to mention all the other stuff that CT, NY, MA and NJ have to offer.

I was never home for the first few years that I lived here.
