I got all hot & bothered and ran out to WalMart, which is a coupla miles from my house, and bought a Samsung Digimax 201. It has the same features as the D-390 ('bout a buck cheaper to boot) w/a 90 day guarantee.
Am in the process of reading the owners manual, because I know nothing about digital cameras. This thing is amazing!

    'Preciate all the info.
Samsung has been around awhile; it seems to be a credible brand in tvs at least. I hope their cameras are good.

If anybody has had a bad (or good) experience w/Samsung cameras, I'd like to hear about it.

    Thanks.

    Cool.
Let me recommend rechargeable AA batteries. They are the must since your camera uses AA.

I have a samsung 35mm that kicks ass for what I paid for it. I've sold a bunch of samsung digitals, and I've never heard any complaints. That's about as good as it gets for positive feedback on the retail end.

Digital Zoom sucks... I only recommend a 2 megapixel if you have optical zoom... if you have ONLY digital zoom then I go 3 megapixels

Right, digital zoom is NOT true zoom. All it does is enlarge the center of the picture, therefore you lose quality. It is a selling gimmick that most people are clueless about. 'Optical zoom' is true zoom, as The Brain said.

I have the D-0380 and love everything about it. Except that it doesn't do too well with macro shots. The flash is stronger than the other digi cams I've had and it recycles quicker too.

With a good printer and photo app you can print decent 8x10's.

One big thing to avoid in most digi cams are ones that use the cmos imaging sensor instead of a ccd one. Most of the cmos ones are actually less than half what they are rated at.

Do get nimh batteries. They are the best. wal mart has deals on them.

one o my friends just bought a cannon 2.0 megapixel with a 2x optical zoom for 150 bucks. That's a better deal than the olympus.

.....Olypus 2 megapixel digital camera w/2.5x digital zoom for $129.99 (new) a good buy?

How so? What does Canon have over Samsung, other than name, possibly?

Keep in mind, that '2.5 digital zoom' is completely worthless. It's just a gimmick to use as a selling point. You can do that with any decent photo app.

"Optical zoom' is what you want if you need zoom. ;)

129 for an olympus is a good price. But they seem to be getting lower and lower.

My 2nd digi cam had 3-1 optical zoom. I rarely used it outside of Panther games.

Canon is a better known brand than samsung. But that doesn't always mean better quality. Any camera you are considering I'd search google for reviews. Or here

it has an optical zoom. plus 3x digital. Digital zoom really isn't good. optical is a true change in focal length of the lense, digital zoom merely enlarges a portion pixel area and in some cases performes a certain amount of image enhancement to give you a viewable image. optical is better. anyway for 30 bucks more you get more zoom.

I see; it just sank in, the optical & digital zoom difference.

How does a 3-1 optical zoom compare to a 80-200mm macro zoom for a regular 35mm camera? [Divide 80 into 200=2.5 to 1(?)]

3 to 1 as compared to 2.5 to 1, perhaps is correct?

    You reckon that's accurate cypering/comparing?
