I tried this on my laptop and there was an error 5 which prevented me from disabling the messenger. Would this require administrator management?

Savio, you'll need to walk me through that. IS dept. has enough to worry about than me bugging them about it.

go to "Run" then type "msconfig"

it will take you a system configuration menu....go to Startup

and uncheck the un-needed items in the background. esp the msgservice (something like that)

Just getting back to this thread. Dave, thanks for the tip. Did what you suggested and not a single one of those annoying messages since. :)

if people can get to your messenger service, they can do a lot worse things to your machine. Don't fool yourself into thinking you just secured your machine, you need to do the right thing and get a firewall between you and the internet. Disabling messenger service is usually fine, but some applications in a corporate world will need it. Also, Instant Messenger (in it's different varieties) is a different beast altogether. You can stop the unwanted messages there in the program - check the options - privacy tab.
