How in the HELL do you keep these things from popping up???? If you don't know which ones I'm talking about, it's just a basica gray box with some type of ad text. The top of the ad says "Messenger service" and a lot of the ads seem to be for links/software to actually eliminate the problem. You don't need your email or internet open for these things to even pop up. I'll get about 5 of them on my desktop in about a 15 minute period.

Have run Adaware and Search & Destroy which did nothing. Any ideas on how to slay this beast??

damn - I have ( or had) the same things.

They got really bad. I finally uninstalled MSN ( came with the PC) and MSN Messenger about 2 weeks ago ( which started causing all kinds of other problems  )

anyway that didn't seem to work at first, the Messenger Service ads kept coming but now that I think about it I haven't seen them in a while. So maybe uninstalling Messenger is the way to go - sucks tho if thats what you use to IM.

I still get way too many other fucking pop ups - the new worst ones are the ones that look just like a system warning - saying your machine is shutting down because it detected the worm - its just a pop up ad too.

ad aware does nothing for pop ups

I have several other annoying ones - it won't let me delete them because it says they are linked to other free software I downloaded although I have no idea which ones they are.

Does anybody know what is the best way to kill pop ups? Don't say ad aware - it has never eliminated any of my pop up ads.

Spam E-mail is an aggravation but not that big of a deal - I just mass delete from my bulk or junk mail folders - its the pop ups that bug the shit out of me.

I don't have a problem with any other popups because I run Pop-UP Stopper which does an awesome job on internet popups. But it doesn't work well on these messenger popups which surface without IE even running. I'm pretty sure what started my problem and that's when I recently installed Yahoo Messenger and AOL AIM. Kind of odd though because I have both on my computer at work and NEVER get these messenger popups. I just cooked/ate breakfast and when I came back, I had 4 of these damn messages sitting on top of each other.

when they were really bad if I left my machine on at night I would have 50 of them nested when I first got back on in the morning.

I'm sure I get alot of mine from some of the stuff my daughter has downloaded. she is always d/l tenny bopper music and game stuff.

guess I need to try Pop Up Stopper - is is freebie stuff or did you buy it?

No wossa, it's free and one of the more aggressive popup stoppers. You can get the free version at:

    Pop-up Stopper

It will load a little icon in your system tray and you can just click on it there to enable/disable it. If there are things that it won't allow to open up that you want (additional browser, media player, etc.) all you have to do is hold down the "shift" key when you go to open something and the pop up stopper will allow it to open. I've used several and I like this one the best.

I'm not sure about that VG. I haven't used messenger to chat in over a year. I didn't use it that much anyway. But if it keeps those damn pop ups away I'll gladly give it up. I use AIM to chat most of the time anyway.

Actually there is a 'service' that runs on 2000 and XP machines called Messenger Service which is being used by something (I don't know what) to pop those up. It has nothing to do with MSN Messenger.

To get rid of these pop ups, you'll need to disable the "Messenger Service", click Start,
then Run, enter "services.msc" and click OK. Scroll down to "Messenger", select it,
right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then
choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped, click OK. Nothing in Windows or any
real third-party applications should be affected by this.

I don't like disabling services but it will make the popups stop. At least until someone figures out what is using the messenger service to do this.
