that's more or less what happened to Schottenheimer when he was fired. Granted, that was an existing coach/GM combo (who hated each other), who'd lost both coordinators (Cameron to Miami, Phillips to DC because Norv didn't want to have to deal with Jason Garrett).

Marty wanted to elevate his son Brian as OC, which might've been somewhat reasonable, but it was his want to make brother Kurt his DC that became a big deal (AJ Smith demanded Ted Cottrell). They squabbled over it until a 14-2 head coach was fired.

Cottrell was forced on Norv, who got the job because Phillips left to get Garrett pushed on him. Norv took on Rivera as a LBs coach, eventually fired Cottrell, and here we are.

The timing is still there to drop Rivera if they wanted (really, only Reid and Marrone are the two guys who have new jobs IIRC) but it won't happen. JR stated that's how it was for the year, and that's honestly fine. While the GM search concluded quickly enough, since again most jobs are still open, it's also a lot to ask for a GM who's never done the job before to supervise a coach he's barely met.

Fair enough, but he's trending the wrong direction to merit the interest IMO.

Norv's always been a good OC, he's just a horrible head coach. Before Harbaugh, Norval was the only one to make Alex Smith look competent.

I think it's a reasonable possibility. They already know what the established head coaches can and can't do.
