no one's ever started their tenure here with less than 7-9, and honestly, I'd like that to continue, but we've been pretty spoiled overall given that 7-9 has to be above the league average for new coaches' first years. If it's 6-10, I'm happy with that, too. That's still improvement, and hope, and compared to years' past, a lot more stashed on IR that will hopefully make a difference next year.

Yeah, there are reasons to be optimistic. Normally I'd feel like so many injured would mean better things next season as well, but I'm not so sure. Achilles injuries are tricky and have a tendency to recur, so I'm worried for Beason. Then Thomas Davis is hopefully done for his own sake. I have no real hope that Otah contributes anything in the future either. As far as the defense is concerned, we pretty much have to hope that Fua, McClain, and the corners develop into better players. Would be nice to either develop, sign, or draft a second consistent DE as well.

The biggest thing to make me feel hope for the defense is the fact that they will have an entire off season to learn the defense. It got thrown together without much time to absorb it thanks to the lockout. It should be better next year even without an infusion of talent.

If we have a decent draft and get Beason back 100% then there is no reason to think they can't compete for a wild card next year.

Speaking of draft positions I'd like to pick up Dre Kirpatrick at #7 and Quinton Couples in the 2nd rd

Based off his season this year I wouldn't be totally surprised, but I get the feeling he'll blow up in the Combines. He saw a ton of double teams that stunted his stats.

If Niners lose tonight (they should) and the Saints beat the Falcons (probable) then I would bet that Brees will not play week 17 and I like the panthers chances vs Chase Daniel. That's the only way 7-9 will be possible.
