My wife and I are finally looking to switch over to digital. We've been hanging on because we liked our old camera and didn't think we could afford the same quality in the digital. We had the Canon Rebel. I know some of you are serious in your photography, so I wanted to look here for advice. We are looking at no more than $3-6 hundred, what is the best choice if you were buying.

does anyone know if the old Rebel lenses fit? Should. If so, you should probably buy into the Canon system.

maybe I should by default post the only camera I've ever really shot too :p

Thanks for the replies. I also had a friend of mine say their old canon lense worked on the digital camera, but their buddy's did not. Keeping my fingers crossed that it works, going to look into it.

take a lens or two into a photo shop and pick their brain, see if what you have is worth continuing to invest. Can't hurt and kit lenses universally blow

the issue is the perspective from an FX lens to an DSLR camera. a 300mm FX lens shoots at 200mm on DX. then there is the af compatibility.

I know on my Pentax K20 that old lenses(20-30+ years old) will work on the newer body. The SR is built into the camera body, which is a plus for hands like mine.

Under $600, your choices come down to the Nikon D3100 (right at $600), Pentax K-R (right at $600), and Canon T3 (around $500). Of those, the Pentax has the best still photo specs and the Nikon has the best combo of pics and 1080p movies. Nikon and Canon have a much greater selection of lenses (around 160 each vs 90 or so for Pentax).

If you're quick, Amazon has the Canon T2i on sale for $599 (usually $750-$800). http://www.amazon.com/Canon-T2i-Dig...ZJHQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323176535&sr=8-1 I just got one and can't wait for it to get here...should be today.

All come with 18-55mm lenses at this pricepoint.
