yeah, it's just a part time thing. It's more useful for showing looks other teams have been successful with. I mean it's one gap, so realistically it's just who you put in a gap and where.

I don't mind the idea of an OLB that can bring it, as that's something we like in our 4-3 SLB as well, and regardless of what we do next year at LB it's safe to say that depth is going to be critical. That's also clearly not something you do with your top pick unless you know you're going to get the Von Miller and not the Aaron Curry. You'd be looking at an impact player.

I don't know where to go with the pick, lucky since we have 11 games and then three months after that to go. Kalil makes a lot of sense, and covers our ass in various ways. It's the "go with your strength" pick I guess. But there's no denying how much we need defense, and we don't have a 3rd to go get it with.

DT seems risky, and there aren't standout names IMO the way there have been the last few years, and arguably the best prospect Jared Click just went out for the year. I read one of you fuckers suggest it wasn't more risky though, so maybe someone will show up and earn it.

    DT drafts 2003 - 2010

"busts" simply equals non-starters as of now (could be on the roster and could develop into the starter, or could be injured) close enough for government work

    by my count:

    Picks 1-6; 5 picks; 1 pro bowlers; 2 starters; 2 busts
    Picks 7-15; 11 picks; 3 pro bowlers; 5 starters; 2 busts
    Picks 15-32; 13 picks; 1 pro bowler; 2 starters; 10 busts
Round 2; 19 picks; no pro bowlers; 7 starters; 12 busts
    Round 3; 27 picks; 2 pro bowlers; 4 starters; 21 busts
Round 4; 24 picks; no pro bowlers; 7 starters; 17 busts
Rds 5-7; 69 picks; no pro bowlers; 6 starters; 63 busts

it would seem to me that picks 7-15 would the ideal area to pick a DT if you're desperate to get a good one. interesting to see so many busts in the bottom half of round 1. fat asses with 1st round contracts ... not the best idea. after the 1st 15 picks in the draft you're chances of getting a pro-bowl DT goes down significantly. 1-6 seems too high to me unless there's a Suh sitting there, which as Mags said there doesn't appear to be this year. more than likely we won't be drafting that high so it will probably make sense to a DT with the first pick provided there's one there we feel really, really good about. if it's a top 6 pick, i still go with a shut down corner if there's one there. if not i try to trade down to draft defense; if i can't only then do i grab an OT or WR.

Gotta think we'll look hard at the free agent pool for immediate needs at DT.

Agreed on Blackmon. If he's anything close to Dez 2.0, then Charlotte may not be his cup of tea. Dallas and Dez deserve each other, not so sure about Blackmon and the Queen City...Smitty is nearly too much for her to handle as it is.

    http://www.nfldraftbible.com/Players/List/2013-Big-Board/Dwayne-Allen.html

As for possible second rounders in the upcoming draft, any chance we might decide to strengthen a strength and draft a guy like Clemson TE Duane Allen?...to go with Olsen, Shockey, & Hartsock? (Olsen's been extended, Shockey signed a one year deal and could likely re-sign but you never know, while Hartsock signed a 2-year deal)

Dude is a beast. Played at 6'4" 265 last year in a traditional offense, and slimmed down to 250 this year for Chad Morris's new spread offense. He's got experience in various schemes, was a big time recruit, played with and against big-time competition (though not on a lot of big stages), and is a potential top-3 TE prospect with true 2-way capability.

Vontez Burfict? Kenny Tate? Of course we love the homer pick, so maybe even Zach Brown.

Hoping and praying we'll be in position to gain picks on draft day this year instead of giving them away like we usually do. Maybe be even identify & target a guy that fits us best and go after him. Foxy supposedly prioritized toughness in his players, which just this makes it doubly disappointing we gave up a future 1st rounder for a guy (Otah) that ended up being a pussy.

Say we get to trade down and gain some early round picks, who might be some possible targets?

CB: Lot of good corner prospects with good size this year: Dre Kirkpatrick, Chase Minnifield, Morris Claibourne, Stephone Gilmore, Casey Howard, Donnie Fletcher, Dezmond Trufant, Dequan Menzie, & Brandon McGee are just some of the corners listed at over 6' tall.

LB: Vontez Burfict, Courtney Upshaw, Donte Hightower, Bruce Irwin, Zach Brown, Travis Lewis...maybe?

DT: ?? a need for sure, but who knows if the value will be there. Top guys like Jerel Worthy & Brandon Thompson still have lot to prove. Are these guys that much better than Tydreke Powell & Marcus Fortson? Intrigued by a few guys like Bama's Josh Chapman, Washington's Alamdea Ta’amu, & Texas's Kheeston Randall.

DE: ?? similar concerns as DT re: value being there. Am not sold on the top end of the DE board either; maybe a real difference maker has yet to emerge at this position this year.

WR: preferably a big, physical receiver with deep threat capabilities but who can also break tackles and run after the catch underneath, but anybody who can make a difference as a #2 would great...Michael Floyd, Dwight Jones, Mohammad Sanu, Juron Criner, Marvin McNutt, Devier Posey.

TE: Clemson's Dwayne Allen (6'4" 255) & BAMA's Michael Williams (6'5" 270 and CFB's best blocking TE according to some)

OT/OG: if a guy like Kalil is there and is obviously the best player available, then why not? It worked for his brother and would fix an immidiate need at RT since Otah apparently likes to party in Miami rather than stay in shape. Other guys might include T/G Kelechi Osemele, G David DeCastro, G Cordy Glenn, T/G Barrett Jones, & T Jonathan Martin.

DT's are just risky in general. Here are the ones draft in 2009. How many do you recognize?

    Brace, Ron Boston College
    Walker, Vance Georgia Tech
    Raji, B.J. Boston College
    Hood, Evander Missouri
    Marks, Sen'Derrick Auburn
    Taylor, Terrance Michigan
    Moala, Fili USC
    Jean-Francois, Ricky LSU
    Jerry, Peria Mississippi
    Richard, Darryl Georgia Tech
    Irvin, Corvey Georgia
    Pryor, Myron Kentucky
    McDonalds, Clinton Memphis
    Favorite, Marlon LSU

Depth is easy, front line talent is not, no matter where they're picked.

Wow, I have to give you some serious credit for posting proof that I was right and you were wrong. It's honestly pretty cool to see someone care more about sharing knowledge than what they look like in an argument.

I love talking about it, but it's way too early for me to give informed opinions on any of these guys unless I thought they might declare last season. If there are specific guys you want to look at, I wouldn't mind making sure to watch a particular game and compare notes with you. I think hasbeen and some others would be down for that as well.

Since the DT talent pool doesn't look that promising or at the very least not worth the spot where the Panthers would select (assuming they don't trade down) off the top of anyones head is there a non breaking the bank DT player going to become free agent and please no Albert Haynesworth suggestions

Paul Soliai is the only one I know of, but I doubt the Dolphins let him get away. I still don't understand why the Panthers didn't go harder after Brandon Mebane.

Is there a position where your chance for drafting a Special player doesn't go down the farther down the draft you go?
