Preseason Panthers vs Giants thread

they all did well to me. I came away shocked that we looked better at DT than DE for the first time in franchise history.
At any rate, I don't worry too much about blown assignments - Fua made a good move but they just missed him, Irvin's stuff he was looping around the guard and it looked like miscommunication - but he, Irvin, Neblett, and McClain all got off the ball well (I slowed tape back down on the first unit a few times and the DTs were very quick with their RTs).

yeah Clowney might've squandered a shot if things had ended right now. Gotta pick it up. LaFell had another good sideline ball that was brought back, but it was his fault - don't step out.


FWIW, I'm fine with either or both QBs being thought of well last night. I might not necessarily share those opinions but I'm not going to bitch at anyone who does. We have to come up with better from one or both as it is. Third down was awful, which may not have been gameplanned, but was the closest thing to 2010 that we saw last night.

I like what I have seen from Edwards so far on the returns, when he looks the ball in first then takes off, but also knows when to signal for the fair catch

Clausen did't look like a deer in the headlights like he did much of last year, he made some good choices but did have that one bad throw to DW.ut did make up for it some.

Olsen was a great pickup both QB's connected with him for some nice plays

now back to the game to see about Newton

 

Thomas Williams

 

With Jason Williams possibly going on PUP or IR, Thomas Williams might just make the team. He just has to beat out Jordan Senn and rookie Lawrence Wilson.

 

He made some plays, but people tend to overrate successful blitzes when evaluating LBs. Senn was much more impressive to me, as he did a phenomenal job of engaging and shedding blockers to reach the ball carrier. I loved that the run defense in general was flowing downhill and talking the runner after minimal gains instead of trying to loop around blocks and giving up 3-4 yards.


Also, Clausen played that screen to DW really well. A lot of QBs will backpeddle too fast or otherwise give it away, but Jimmy did a nice job of selling the play, which is what kept the DL coming after him. Nice touch and accuracy when delivering that ball as well.

 

This may have been covered, but Gross has some blood on his hands from the Clausen pick. He was forklifted by 90, and Clausen's throw (trajectory) was altered by the pressure. Other than that, he looked fine. Prudent with reads, nice job working the safeties and LB's with pump fake and head movement. Want to see him operate with 89 out there

 

You gotta remember when Clausen was at Notre Dame his success depended on the O-Line and from our running game last year we know all about that O-Line.

Clausen finished his freshman year having completed 56.3% of his passes for 1254 yards, with 7 touchdowns (plus two rushing TDs) and 6 interceptions and a passing efficiency of 103.85, and he was sacked a team-record 34 times.[24]

During his sophomore season, he completed 60.9% of his passes for 3172 yards, 25 touchdowns and 17 interceptions and a 132.5 efficiency rating which places him as the 44th ranked QB in Division 1-A football.[25] He led the Fighting Irish to a 7-6 record, culminating in a 49-21 victory against Hawaii in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl — which ended Notre Dame's NCAA-record nine-game bowl losing streak. Clausen set Notre Dame bowl records with 406 yards passing and five touchdowns and was named the bowl's co-MVP.[26]

 

Andre Ware, David Klingler, Heath Shuler, Akili Smith, etc...all had gaudy college #s too.

 

I believe Dog's points are that Clausen has struggled before but found a way to improve, and that he's the type of quarterback who is going to heavily depend on the players around him. I happen to agree, but it's all irrelevant since Clausen's days here are numbered. Even if he plays better than Newton, the fanbase has moved on.
