you had me right up until you said there were all on Clausen's level. mallett and newton would both be light years better. not so sure on Gabbert. he's looked awful to me in the few "highlights" i have seen ... but i still think he would be much better than jimmy.

He's not even first-round material. Gabbert should go in the second or third round on sheer talent and skill development.

What? Is he not playing football this season at Stanford? Did Peyton Manning prioritize video games or textbooks when he choose to return to Tennessee for his senior season?

Jesus H. Christ. Yes, of course it matters. Why do you think analysts mention that every time they're talking about someone who played in a spread? It's a totally different type of offense, and going from that to the NFL is a tremendous adjustment.

Dude, that would hurt QBs far more than any other position. I agree with you about it being an issue, but that's another reason not to choose a QB in the first round if you would want him to play that first season.

If we do take Newton, Gabbert or any other QB, I really hope they sit his ass for a year regardless.

If we stay at #1, no matter who we take we will reach. Newton is a mid first rounder--so is gabbert. Put the first overall pick pressure on them, and both bust. No Bradfords, no Suhs, no Jake Longs even. Just a Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn. DEs are safe but not the biggest need, DTs are deep in the draft. Dareus makes the most sense, but he could be there later in the top 10 picks.

I would bring Moore back. I would build the pieces around the QB position. Draft a third round QB like Ponder and let him compete with Pike and Clausen. Let Moore compete with a veteran free agent (5 qbs in camp is more secure than drafting Gabbert, IMO.) McElroy in the 4th--a smart chap who wins. Kaepernick as a project. etc.

yeah, the spread definitely matters. This particular run of players has featured a lot from spread - some of which were great so far (DW, Stewart), some serviceable (Rosario, Schwartz), some MIA (Barnidge).

It's not a deal breaker, but the QBs are quite often at a huge disadvantage. Spread option is not unlike hiring an immigrant worker to an office job.

We'll have to wait and see how Gabbert does at his Pro day. If Rivera likes him enough we might just reach and take him number1. This happened last year when the Rams took Bradford even though Suh was the better overall player.

My thinking is that Rivera would be more comfortable going into the 2011 season with the current DT's, DE’s, and CB’s than with the current QB’s on the roster.

But the spread also teaches quick reads and timing, something that could take a traditional drop-back quarterback years to develop.

Any of these QB's will take years to develop. Makes me wonder why we're even talking about them for Carolina's #1 pick.

    But it's fun nonetheless.

Why would we ever want to draft more mid-round project QB's ? We have a roster full of them now. The only QB I'd even consider is Newton, just because of his potential ( and I'd sit him for the year).

Yeah we either draft a QB with our 1st pick or we're not gonna draft one at all.

What about a trade of first rounders with the Bengals for Carson Palmer?
