I'm pretty sure we could have found the cap room to pay Spoon but decided to stay within the budget. If we had kept him, the offense likely wouldn't have been a whole lot different than what we saw in those 3 years. That has pretty much been our limitation, not the D. Are we a better team if we swap Beason out for Witherspoon or are we better with Beason?

Williams just turned 26 and has 2 more years under contract. That puts him at 28. Assuming the new CBA doesn't change the rules a lot, Franchise him for a year to age 29 or extend him 2 or 3. But remember Shaun Alexander and don't wait too long to dump him. I would rather watch him play well for a year or 2 with another team than let his salary become an anchor to us.

I know it's dumb to compare salaries in different eras, but this one is comical:

If Julius plays one quarter this season, which at $16.7M comes out to a bit over $250,000, he will have made more in 15 minutes (probably about 8 minutes of action) than Johnny Unitas ever made in a full NFL season.

The better question is would be better with Spoon in place of Diggs. If we had kept Spoon we could have still drafted Beason....

And yet they still count against the cap, and together their deals average around 18 million/year. EDIT oops the 18 million is from the Gross/Gamble contracts... thought you were responding to a different post.

Spoon was the MLB when Morgan was out. After he left, we started Chris Draft. Keeping Spoon probably would have shifted the need elsewhere at draft time 2007.

Spoon started at WLB. No reason he could not stay there and we still draft Beason.

i think Spoon played MLB in 2002 when Morgan was out, and he was not real good in there at MLB. after that year, i think we kept Spoon at WLB and that Vinny replaced Morgan when he was out until we got Chris Draft. keeping Spoon i don't think would have lessened the need for a MLB, which i think was the intent when we drafted Beason. So on that point, I agree with Thelt that we would have still have drafted Beason as MLB would have still been a critical need since Draft sucked.
