My nephew has taken an interest in drawing, and he's pretty good. So, for his birthday, I made him a portable desk with folding legs and a removable plexiglass top to display his artwork...

You should think of selling to others

There might be a real market out there for them.

Nice work hasbeens. Couple questions, what are the star knobs on top for and how are you locking the legs in place when they're opened?

Edit.... what kind of wood did you use?

Not yet. First time I've ever tried to make anything like that.

I don't know if I could make one cheap enough to sell.

Thanks. The star knobs hold down the acrylic (plexiglass) writing surface so he can put pictures and stuff underneath it. In retrospect, I should've gotten smaller ones.

Unfortunately, the mechanism I planned to use to keep the legs locked open (a cross-brace) didn't work out as planned. It sits fairly stable by itself, but it's about the right size for my nephew to keep the legs apart with his thighs as he sits.

The writing surface is cabinet grade 1/2" birch plywood. The trim and legs are poplar.

The joinery is all dowels and glue -- no screws or nails (except for the hinges).
