Not trying to be a smartass, but I wouldn't argue my case by starting with the Matt Millen draft theory.

i think this goes back to the philosophy we have had in the past few drafts. pick the proverbial BPA.
if a stud OT is there and he is ranked higher than every other guy on our board then we pick him. if it's RB or DE then we pick him. we seem to be looking for talent at any position.
if it's too close to call, fox and co. go defense.

Well, the Lions as an example is a poor one. One of their first rounders was a bust, and even then. two to three receivers can share the field on the same snaps. Kalil was a BPA scenario, in the second round. With the 13th pick, it really DOES matter, and it's NOT silly. It doesnt matter than DW was a late first rounder. What DOES matter, is that the 13th is a top 15 pick, and if we draft a guy who wont see the field much, is fucking RIDICULOUS. Now if Clady, Williams, Harvey and such are taken, and Mendenhall is the clear BPA, then perhaps....

As for putting all your eggs in one basket...of course not. For the record, I loved the Kalil pick last year, because, quite frankly, it made sense, even though most were too foolish to think it did. He played G and C, and with it being so important to pick up all the talented OL or DL you can get, it made great sense. And again, no one is suggesting putting everything into DW. If the draft werent so deep with RBs this year, I might be more comfortable with drafting a Mendenhall or someone else....there will be plenty of time to pick up a decent back to compliment Williams.....

But I get your point, and overall agree with the gist of what youre saying....but still strongly disagree with the position of RB in the first round. And keep in mind, as a player, I fucking love Mendenhall. But in order, I want Williams, then Harvey. I'll be pissed if it's someone else. WHen I think of the line situations, it almost makes more sense to pick Harvey, though I think Harvey will be a very good end, and Williams will be a pro bowl tackle. I still get the sense that Williams will be better than Clady too, but eh, who knows....anyway, Im rambling now.
