Panthers call players-only meeting to clear the air

CHARLOTTE – In an effort to keep their season from falling apart, Carolina Panthers offensive lineman Mike Wahle called a players-only meeting for Wednesday afternoon to clear the air.

The Panthers are 2-2, but they’ve not looked good in any of their past three games, prompting defensive tackle Kris Jenkins to question the heart and passion of this team in the locker room following Sunday’s 20-7 loss to Tampa Bay.

Wahle, who is not a team captain, didn’t want to discuss what he intended to talk about at the meeting with the media. But teammates said the goal is to get everyone on the same page.

“I think it’s a good idea,” offensive tackle Jordan Gross said during Wednesday's open locker room session, a few hours before the players-only meeting. “There has been a lot that has gone on in the last week. I mean we’re a team where everybody gets along real well. Instead of just talking in the locker room, we might as well have everybody present. It’s not a big drama story. We just want to talk.”

Cornerback Ken Lucas said now is not the time for team to become divided.

“We are all trying to put our heads together and make this thing work,” Lucas said. “We can't start to point fingers and get our heads down.”

The Panthers trail the Bucs by one game in the NFC South.

But it’s not the record that is bothering the Panthers as much as it is how they’re playing. They seem to be sleepwalking their way through the season and Jenkins seemed right on the money with his comments.

The Panthers have been dominated twice at home by Houston and Tampa Bay and they could be without their two signal callers -- Jake Delhomme on offense and middle linebacker Dan Morgan on defense – again this week.

The Panthers have a crucial stretch coming up in which they face New Orleans and Arizona on the road before returning home after a bye week to host unbeaten Indianapolis.

“I think we have a good team and good players and now is the time to get on track,” Gross said. “I don’t think anybody wants to waste any more opportunities.”

Tight end Christian Fauria, a 13-year NFL veteran, isn’t a big fan of players-only meetings but said they can serve a purpose if players approach it with a team-first mentality. He said he’s been in some meetings that are downright comical, and others that have been productive.

“It all depends on the team,” Fauria said. “Sometimes it’s just people talking just to talk and sometimes people make some good points and everyone is on the same page. Maybe just people want to get out what they’re feeling. All I know is you can only have it once. Once you do, you can’t keep having team meetings because it loses its credibility.”

Of the 53 players on the Carolina roster, Fauria is the only one who has won a Super Bowl ring. In fact, he owns two, both coming with the New England Patriots.

But he doesn’t expect to say much in the meeting unless something strikes him.

“I’m not going to get up there and say, ‘I’ve been there before,’” Fauria said, mockingly sticking out his chest. “Nobody wants to hear that. It’s like my Dad telling me how fast he used to run. I really don’t care. It’s not relevant to the situation. So I will sit and listen and if I have a point I will make it.”

David Carr, who has taken over for the injured Delhomme at quarterback, said there is plenty positive that can come out of a players-only meeting.

“When you get in there and hear it from a guy’s heart and hear what they really feel about what is going on, that’s good,” Carr said. “I wouldn’t say it makes you play better but it definitely makes you accountable to your guys. You want to step it for them. You spend a lot of time with these guys and you don’t understand how much it means to other guys that you play well. That is one of the things, be accountable.”

Added Fauria: “It’s never a bad thing, but you just want to make sure everyone is on the same page and everyone realizes it’s not time to panic. Really, it’s everything the coaches are saying, but just in case somebody happened to doze off while he was saying it, let’s make sure he knows we’re gong to hold him accountable.”

Somethings wrong with the attitude of the defense.

Somewhere I think Jenkins made note of the feeling of some that everything is cool, ie tis ok to be average. It implied to me that some are coasting.

I am starting to believe they are not confident in Trgo's scheme, (it doe seem to have changed somewhat.)

Plus, would your caoch loose credibility in your eyes if he put on 50 lbs while telling you to get your ass in shape and try harder?

worrisome that none of the supposed captains on the team thought it important enough to call the meeting and Wahle had to step up and call for it. Buckner (or some one claiming to be him) is on a thread over at Charlotte.com backing Jenkins on what he's saying and is questioning some of the players openly. This could very easily go the wrong way both for the team and for Fox. Maybe now we're seeing why JR had his little meeting before the season. Looks like he should have been wearing cleats instead of dress shoes when he tried to put foot to ass.
