Thanks for the link. Yea I've read that or someone or something like it before. How factual it is I don't know I do know that according to the NCAA's own accounting Bama could/can lay claim to 17 national championships (http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/ia_football_past_champs.html) and how factual that is I don't know. I guess I'll just do what NCAA pretty much does now, let somebody or something do it for me and stay out of the fray.

 

Before the BCS, the NCAA really didn't recognize a NC I don't believe. You just had organizations that awarded them, the AP and the College Coaches poll eventually being the two highest regarded of those polls. But there were others, and there's always been contreversy associated with it.

NCAA has published what is recognized as the "consensous" champion of the major polls of the era, although as many as three teams have shared the consensous" championship.

Bama is listed 10 times here with at least a share of a NC.

I think it's pretty hard to claim a national championship back in the day if you didn't win the Rose Bowl. It pitted the top team from the East against the top team from the West, correct?

 

I heard that Bama really only has like 6. They claimed a national title with like a 9-2 or 9-3 season. Great game last night. Thought for sure Georgia was going to blow it

 

Bryant had six, Wade had a couple and Thomas too - I think. I know they won a couple of Rose Bowls maybe three. And like another poster said the ncaa acknowledges 17 - so why do they just claim 12?
