You know Collin, I had this response all ready to go that would have given you back what you gave me and typically give others (it was very insulting), but decided it's not worth the fight. It's not in my nature to get into pissing contests...especially with anonymous people on the internet.

Suffice to say that I disagree with you, and that I realize your claims are nothing but opinion, no matter how hard you try to dress them up as fact. You are guessing as much as I am (I never claimed to know what other teams are thinking, just gave an educated guess based on things I have read, heard, and conversation with some people I know). But that's neither here nor there. The bottom line is that no matter how hard you try to attack my opinion, it is worth just as much as yours on this board, so I choose to avoid a pointless bitchfest.

With all that said, if you can come with any facts (not opinion, but cited facts) that dispute anything I have written, I will gladly say you are right. But as it stands, I don't believe you are and I'll just leave it at that.

    for what it's worth:

CLAYTON OFF THE MARK ON RUSSELL REPORTS
ESPN's John Clayton continues to insist that no progress has been made in talks between the Raiders and No. 1 pick JaMarcus Russell since prior to the draft in April.
We continue to hear that progress has indeed been made, and that the two primary impediments at this point are the structure of the deal, and the reluctance of Russell's agents to pull the trigger until Calvin Johnson has signed a contract at No. 2.
As to the structure of the contract, we heard earlier this week that the snag is the amount of money that will be devoted to an option bonus. Unlike the Panthers, who supposedly want to give No. 25 pick Jon Beason no option bonus, the Raiders (as we hear it) as resisting efforts by Russell to maximize the option bonus.
The option bonus is the second-tier of the signing bonus, earned as of (in many cases) the outset of the next league year. Exercising the option bonus extends the contract by a finite period of time, usually one or two years. Many option bonuses also have a non-exercise fee that is equal to the amount of the option bonus, which means that the money gets paid even if the option isn't exercised.
The only way to avoid having to pay the option bonus is by cutting the player prior to the due date.
But option bonuses have fallen out of favor of late, due to a ruling in a grievance involving former Broncos receiver Ashley Lelie. After his 2006 holdout, the team tried to recover a big chunk of his option bonus, based on contractual language allowing the team to do so. It was determined, however, that option bonuses are not subject to forfeiture.
Thus, teams that want to restrict option bonuses are looking merely for protection. Some of the first-round contracts signed this year have pushed option bonus money into roster/reporting bonuses paid in future years, thereby giving the player an incentive to not holdout, and to not get suspended -- and protecting some of the team's money in the event that the player isn't available.

Couldn't think of anything that hadn't been said ten times before, could you? Don't pretend to take the high road. You already attacked me in your prior post, which is fine by me.
No, they're not just opinion. It's a fact that we've given out option bonuses. It's a fact that the other first round players from this draft have gotten them. It's a fact that those teams have decided that it's an acceptable level of risk to avoid a holdout.
Sure you did. I pointed out what they've actually done, while you said the following: "So yes, if the Panthers do eventually set the precedent by getting what they want, you will see more teams adopt this tactic. How many, who knows, but it surely will happen."

"It will surely happen." Note that again, please. "It will surely happen." Does that sound like a statement of pure speculation on your part or does it sound like you're channeling Miss Cleo and predicting the future?
Surely you don't honestly believe that. I have no personal enmity towards you, which presumably means that you make reasonably intelligent posts since I can't remember anything exceptionally stupid from you. But similarly, the fact that I don't remember any of your prior posts casts doubt on the idea that you're on the same level. My credibility as far as my opinions has been developed over years of analysis, so for you to express that yours carries the same weight is obvious hyperbole.
That teams have gone ahead and given option bonuses to their draft picks is a fact that disproved your assertion that they're all petrified of them. As stated before, it makes no sense for you to say that despite the fact that they've given out option bonuses this year, that they'll refuse to do so from now on because of the Panthers. It's silly. If they felt that way, they'd be right with the Panthers now.

Well, what's gonna happen with this thing? Who caves first? Or does no one cave and we suffer a wasted 1st pick? Is the team really willing to do that over a relatively small amount of money?

Beason will presumably cave at some point, although I still don't understand why Hurney is being a dick about it. This makes it very unlikely that Beason will be a starter, and it will cause trouble if Morgan goes down very early in the season.

and it's a shame, because we could both be more powerful at WLB, and not be a prick to a potential cornerstone. Plus if and when we need him, he won't fuck his knee up because he missed time.
Really do hope we conform soon.

Stupid to waste time and energy quibbling over this the way the Panthers have done. They need him and he wants to play here.... stop being assholes and sign him to a contract like he wants because it doesn't sound like he's asking for anything unusual for his draft spot.

He may have said All the other 1st rounders got option bonuses, but other stories, local and national, have said most.

The fact that they gave Smith an option bonus really gives Beason legs to stand on. Remember that the negotiator proposed one, and then took it back (as if overruled). Maybe they can split the diff and give half in option and half in roster bonuses. Remember, its on Beason that says incentives. The other reports said roster bonuses, which are not as nice as options, but much nicer than incentives.

This isn't ugly yet. Just inconvenient.

    PFT Warning:

This seems like a precedent that will only cause fewer rookies to want to join our team and will be problematic in the future.
