come on now, you boys really think key gave a shit about "mentoring"? we all know NFL wideouts are only about ME ME ME. Key was out there on ESPN looking out for the next 15 years of his life. and he did a damn good job. he said the right things about the kid "he's just like me, i'll teach him everything i know." bullshit. he got a pretty smile and the words to match.

    Cap implications of cutting Johnson
Let’s do a little more separating the facts from fiction on the finances of the Keyshawn Johnson situation.

Here’s the deal: He was scheduled to count $3.25 million against the salary cap this year. Instead, the Panthers will have to absorb $3.75 million in outstanding pro-ration of his original bonus, but they’ll actually save cap room with this move. As part of a new rule this year, Johnson will be designated as a post-June 1 release. That will allow the Panthers to spread his cap hit over two years.

He’ll count $1.25 million this year and $2.5 million against the 2008 cap.

I don't know. I defintely thought it was pretty fucking stupid.

First, he shouldn't have been there to begin with. But when he was asked the question, he shoulda said "No comment".

We went into the draft what 6 mil under? What will it take to sign the players drafted? Since we traded down we ought to get it done for 3-4 mil? I guess we are saving ourselves some cash for training camp pickups

    Why Panthers canned Keyshawn
Here's why Keyshawn Johnson is gone:

Although the receiver, who was followed by controversy in his previous stops, seemed to be a model citizen in his one season with the Panthers, there were some-behind the scenes issues.

Some very important people in the organization weren't happy when Johnson failed to stand up and take blame away from quarterback Jake Delhomme after some critical passes intended for Johnson were intercepted. At least one very important person in the organization urged Johnson to do that and he didn't.

Johnson also didn't endear himself to some key people by questioning some coaching moves. The Panthers are on the hook for $3.75 million in salary cap space because of remaining signing bonus prorations. They may designate Johnson as a June 1 cut and spread the cap hit over two years.

The decision to part ways with Johnson actually was made at least several weeks ago. When a rumor was circulating about this move last week, Panthers general manager Marty Hurney told The Observer that information was "not accurate.''

Apparently, the Panthers wanted to make sure their bases were covered before officially making the move, and the clincher came when they drafted USC's Dwayne Jarrett in the second round Saturday.

IF the team does in fact designate him a June 1 cut. And before anybody figures out how we going to spend the bucks, we don't get the cap savings until June 1. that's only 1 month but Briggs won't be in mini camp.

we don't have a need for Briggs at the moment. The setup per Hurney is:

    SLB-Davis
    MLB-Morgan
    WLB-Beason

I would definitely hope this is the case. Just as the draft pick makes a bit more sense now, i'm sure the whole scenario of the pick and cut will make more sense as the next move is unfolded. if theres one thing fox and hurny have its football business sense, and i'm pretty sure most of you would agree with that...unless you put hennings failures on their shoulders, which you can argue...

I think it can be argued. I'm sure Fox and Hurney would if they were willing to discuss. Anybody else will have a difficult cuz we can only speculate.

You try to build team chemistry and character, which is why we want to also dump Jenkins even though we will not be as physically talented without him. Fox was quick to get rid of some of those personalities when he got here as he places that much importance on it and we became a better team quick (with arguably less talent on paper). And, Fox has continued to work his ass off trying to instill the qualities he wants on this team (and I think we can all be proud of). You can't put them on paper so it is hard to quantify but I think they are more important than simply talent. Obviously, you need talent but it becomes awfully difficult to win nowadays in this league without the character to go with it (though the Pats seem intent on proving this theory wrong ... maybe they are thinking they can surround bad character with so much good that the bad gets drowned out). Us having gone to a SB without a ton of talent, I think speaks volumes about the success of character.

With Jenks we can see with our eyes the lack of character. With Key it's not so obvious but to me there were tell-tell signs like his lack of fighting for position on the pass in the Eagle game. I personally think Key talked a good game about wanting to contribute to winning a SB but i think his fight had got up and gone as had his focus. If so, this is crap you don't rubbing off on your other players. Apparently, they tried to work with him hoping to see some change of heart and got nowhere. So now they have given up. I don't see how anyone can second-guess that.

You got to think now that drafting a WR (actually 2 of them) was seen as a critical need so they could make this move.

What pisses me off with Marty and Foxy is it's one step forward two steps back seemingly every year.
