Post-draft thoughts

yes. From a weak draft we got four top fifty players, and that's a lot better than reaching for a safety. What the fuck we're going to do about safety? That's a different idea, and I really hope they have something there.

Beason plays fast. Not a 40 time to do cartwheels over, but Fox points out that he's a 4.6 backer, on a good day. Quick thinker, and instinctive. Played at a high level in the ACC. Leader. Worried a little bit about him reaching a growth cap, but we shall see. Seems like Speilman ran in the 4.8-4.9 range, at a shade over 6'. That's not to say that Beason will be a pro bowler, and you would always prefer the speed. But there's an appreciably high number of LB's who can run, but can't read. (Sure, they're fast, but have no clue where to go). I'll take my chances on a 4.7-er who can think and react his way through a series.

Need someone to explain to me how much downside there really is with Jarrett. I could understand the work ethic argument, if:

1. He was taken in the 1st round.
2. This was Kansas City.

Fact is, Jarrett was taken later than he anticipated, and is going to be a teammate with his school's most recognizable receiver (ever). Then, there's that Smith guy too. So, not a ton of room to pull the "well, shit, i just ain't up for finishing this third down play, so fuck it." I saw Colbert pull that shit last year on MNF (was at the game), and paid close attention as #19 dressed his sorry ass down, right on the field. Jarrett's attitude just doesn't concern me. All I see is a 6'4" mammoth with great hands and good feet. If his work ethic was marginal, making those plays, then imagine what we're looking at if he actually gives a shit. Even if he only gives enough of a shit to come to work and go home, we're looking at three different 6'3"-plus options. Oh, and Smith fits in somewhere, I'd imagine.

Kalil--no need to even talk about it.

Rest of the bunch is a mixed bag. The kid from UGA (of whom I know little about) seems to be a good fit. Good motor. A little short for a DE (and the obvious comparison is Derrick Burgess). I'd take that, but we'll see.

Robinson is a smart, low-risk pick. He will/should return the punts next year (which frees #20 up). As noted, he has the tools to become a 3 (which would time out well with Key's eventual retirement).

Shaw. Interesting character. He's a Brit, right? Interesting. Imagine that--a British backer owning Beason's 40 time. He sure can more. Love to see him stick.

The rest....hell, who knows. Rosario looks like more turd-ness. Kid from Baylor--Salley, part deux.

 

yeah. Unless they're really high on Anderson, and I mean really ridiculously high, Beason is much more talented than he or Diggs. Morgan getting hurt is inevitable, but I'm kinda hoping by that point Shaw will have shown he should've been a first day guy and will start. If not, Beason is more than fine inside and Diggs will be a very able situational player.

and yeah, at times Davis really had great games. He had some bad ones too, but I was happy with how he's coming along.

yeah, I think by that point as much as we wished for one, a safety wasn't going to be enough. We're still putting it off, which is concerning. I figured that shit had stopped, but we really do just want the stopgap ideal and it's concerning. It won't work any better with Minter gone either.

I never would've guessed an inside lineman would've been picked, no. Last thing on my mind. But this was the best possible player to pick, the absolute prototype.

Looks like Davidson has some sway. And ideally, the picks we made on offense were what I'd want, if we'd done right in free agency (TE, at least one safety).

 

If everything goes smoothly, Smitty, Jarrett and Robinson should be our top 3 by 2009.

 

We did that with Fordham around the goal line. I'm sure we could use something similar with Kalil. Hell, I hope they give him a look at FB near the endzone.

 

The value for safety really never was there. We paid a lot of attention to Nelson, but 14 was really high for him, and I see a lot Grant in him, both good and bad. The trade down got us Kali, who I had as a late first, early second guy.

Merriweather I heard could have been the pick at 25, but when that didn't happen, it just wasn't going to break for us.

Our long term starter will have to come later. With Minter retiring, it will be tough to look for two players, but not as tough as say, corner.

 

Sounds similar from what I've read. Best we can hope for here is some special teams impact, because he's a big project.

I'm starting to come around on Rosario. For one, I'm glad he's heavier than 225. That made absolutely no sense. And seeing how Oregon liked to use him in screen-type situations, he could be functional in our offense.

I love our top 4 picks.
