I don't follow college baseball that much but why did Coach Fox put game 2s catcher at first and the usual firstbasemen on the bench (or wherever?) Steeds throw to first sucked but the guy on first damn near had his plant foot on the home plate side of first. He should have come off the bag and caught that ball if not make the play with a correct placement of his plant foot. Whatever. No excuses Congrats to the Beavers on their win. They took advantage of a LOT of mental errors on the Tar Heels part.

    changes

the primary catcher was playing 1st base; the usual 1stbaseman was playing 3rd base; the usual 3rdbaseman was DH'ing; & a new 2nd baseman inserted.
The national championship game seems an unlikely stage to shake up the lineup.
What happened to going with what got you to the dance?

    Fox wears tutu

Coach Fox got too cute last night. He's worried about defense so the team that went 8-1 in the CWS needed shaking up. He dances on his toes, taking Fronk off the grass inserting Flack @ 3rd, leaps with Federowicz on first and splits with a host of changes at 2nd base. BJ behind the plate. All in all he puts his folks in position of great jeopardy and he got what sought to avoid.

Here's the result position by position: 3rd: Flack for Fronk worked out OK but... could a quicker set of feet got to the bunt Bardo threw wild? we'll never know. Coaching Grade: B

Catcher: BJ threw out how many? zippo and one guy that was DOA but winds up sneaking in on a high throw - leading to the first run. And two other guys get in on throws to the 1st base side. BJ goes 1/4 with 2Ks Coaching Grade: F

2nd base: Gore, Spencer (PH), Steed. You're worried about defense so you take out what you think is the best defender (he got the start eh?) you pull him out to PH with runners in scoring position you substitute the guy you've had in the icebox, who helped you get there who's gotten one previous at bat, that kid knows what you really think cause of what you do not what you might say and for all that spinning and twisting you get 0 for 4 and not the best throw to first... but it was catchable. Coaching Grade: F... I'm takin it like a man grade for Steed: A++ in front of the cameras when their was plenty of blame to go around.

1st base: Federowicz for Flack. Could cost the game... how much 1st did he play this year? But on "the" play, his footwork was hideous resulting in a foot shorter reach and lack of balance. To his credit, he did make an outstanding pick of a Bardo pick-off attempt that one hopped him at about 90. Coaching Grade: D

Pitcher: Bardo absolutely DOMINATED as the game went on. So what's the coach do in the 8th... plant some doubt! Yea thats the ticket... I go out their and question him, show a lack of confidence, yea thats the ticket to success, sow seeds of doubt. So the guy on the hill who has set down 13 outta 14 batters might be "struggling", oh by the way he's still pumping molten lava at 96-97 mph. What are you thinking? Coaching Grade: F

So none of the dancing tutu moves paid off and we wind up with coulda, shoulda, woulda.:banginghe

First of all....where are all the Carolina fans hiding. Can you imagine if they had won.....they'd be all over this board crowing about how NC has the BEST HS baseball in the country, how Woodard should have been drafted in the 1st round, and how Chapel Hill is the new mecca of college baseball.

Let's face it, UNC had as big an advantage as any team has ever had going into the best of 3 series. They just didn't get it done! Coach Fox showed one of the biggest faults of college baseball.....micro managing the game by coaches whose egos are too big to realize that the game is for (and about) the players.....not THEM. College baseball now resembles a video game played by coaches (in MOST cases).

Congrats to the Beavers. Not many would have given them a chance but they hung tough and pulled it out.

It's really much, much worse than that.
Fox rarely had his best defender on the field, the entire CWS.

Kyle Shelton, who can play ss,3b,or 2b, had only one error in 69 chances for a .986 fielding % during the entire season. By far the best among players at those positions.
And he is a Pinch hitter for the DH in the National Championship game ????
Take a look and tell me why he is on Fox's bench:
    F% BA
    Shelton .986/.328
    Gore .960/.227
    Steed .935/.265

Since when do you go for a defensive replacement with a worse fielding % ?

Yea, that's what I was thinking @ 3rd ("quicker set of feet"), if he was so frightened by Fronk.
