What's the benefit of dual core?

I won't overclock. Used for work.

dual core is (effectively) like having two cpus able to run different tasks at full bore. this doesn't mean you've got two processors to work on the same task to make it faster, unless the program is designed to take advantage of multi-processing -- and few really are. photoshop probably does for some filters, some 3d animation packages... anything that uses enough cpu cycles that you have to wait an unreasonable amount of time will probably have had some multi-processor code added to split up the task for those who want to spend $$ to make it go faster.

what dual-core/dual-cpu does allow, tho, is for you to run a processor intensive application -- like say encoding a dvd -- and still have a free cpu to do other stuff like play a game.

If you really need a bump up just get an AMD 64 blah blah 2 gig-ish CPU and match all that FSB crap with the memory yadda yadda...

Unless you're drowning the clock with cutting and pasting those high rez pictures of tooth DNA strand by strand... then get a Mac. Intosh or Donalds... same thing. I do have a friend in Raleigh who can hook you up with a year old, poorly used Dell though.

Good god. Whazza? Where the hell am I?
