FWIW its PFW and its posted on ESPN Insider. To me it only really says they've covered their asses in case he gets hurt again this year.

To me it says the coaches are going to work him in a little slower, give in some time to adjust to the stress and play him more and more as the season wears on. By crunch time hopefully he be ready to rock. If he breaks again at his salary he might be gone.

Moon, how could we NOT be concerned. He has been out 2 years in a row now. To not bring in another quality starter shows you've not learned a thing managing your team. Much like the RB problem.

I think this is the part that gets people's panties in a bunch. There's a difference between approaching DT with the idea that we might need someone to help if Jenkins does down again, and approaching DT with the idea that we needed two starters. I don't believe the latter to be true because I don't think Lewis is viewed as an every-down starter. Even if Jenkins went down again, I'd bet the farm that we'd still see Carstens playing most of the run downs.

I dont see Lewis as a starter either. I see it like the Wallace situation. However, should Jenkins have problems coming back you've got better debth than just Carstens.

Lewis got paid backup money, right? At least when compared to Kemo and all our other Dlinemen.

I am not so sure Carstens would be the first replacement. It will all come down to how well Lewis looks in practice. In my heart of hearts I really believe the Panthers hope Lewis would be the first replacement and that Carstens would just provide further depth.

    We shall see..........

No, I'm pretty sure you're wrong Growl, and it has to do with what each player's strengths are. Carstens is a pretty solid run defender when not facing Larry Allen or Steve Hutchinson, because he engages his man and stays in his gap. Lewis is a terrible run defender, but a pretty good pass rushing DT. That means that if something were to happen to Jenkins, Carstens would most likely play on most downs with Lewis coming in on obvious passing downs. And yes, Lewis got veteran backup money.

Well I hope Jenkins stays healthy and we do not have to find out. Ultimately, it will be determined in practice and on the field. It will be interstesting to see the rotation early in the season. I predict Carstens will get playing time, but that the first substitute is Lewis' job to lose.

BTW, to the extent that D.Gantt has insight into the Panthers' current thinking he references Carstens as the backup to Jenkins,Kemoeatu, and Lewis. I honestly think that is the Panthers hope.

:banginghe Dude, read what I just posted. I was trying to explain to you the differences in DT skills. It is relevant, and knowing them will make your opinion more edumacated.
