Hello all, anyone know anything about Telnet. I have been trying to telnet into a router and I always get the same error message no matter which router I connect to. these routers are up and running properly and others in my office are able to get connected with no problems. this tell me that there is something wrong with my computer, maybe some app has hijacked my telnet protocols or something.

the error message I have been getting is

"Could not open connection to the host on port 23 Connect failed"

    any help would be appreciated

first thing you should do is ping the router to make sure you can reach it. (ping ip-addr or hostname)

then check the settings of you officemates' configuration. it's possible they are using a different port, tho 23 is the standard for telnet.

do you have any firewall or netblocking software on your computer?

what program are you using to telnet?

This was what I was thinking. WinXP firewall is more annoying than its worth.

yeah, i don't use it at all. if he can ping the router, that would answer a lot of questions, tho it's still possible something like zone alarm is active and blocking selective ports or programs.

    thank you for responding.

I can ping the router with no problems, I also do not use windows firewall, nor any other type of blocking software, I do hower have symantec antivirus but it is supplied by the company I work for and is on all of my coworkers computer and they can still telnet into to any of the routers. there are about 800 in our network and I am not able to telnet to any of them but I am able to ping them all.

    Thank you

Damn Brain, I expect more of you than that...

If you can't telnet to a router, maybe the router doesn't have telnet access enabled? Maybe you use telnet to get to it, but not on the standard telnet port (the same way I can telnet into the SMTP port (25) of an SMTP host and type away)? Maybe you have to configure the systems that are allowed to telnet into the routers?

It is NOT your XP Firewall...

    can you telnet to here?

    telnet://nethack.alt.org

that'll at least test your telnet capabilities on your local machine.

I am just using microsofts command line (dos prompt) connecting to cisco 2600 and 1700 routers. I know the routers are configured to accept telnet because others in the company I work for are having no problems accessing the exact same routers that I am trying to connect to. I know that the problem is my laptop and that something has "borked" my telnel capabilities. I am just trying to find out how to fix the problem on my laptop. I will try the link above to see what that does for me

    Thank you

Sorry wouldn't shock me if I'm off. Been dealing with viruses non stop at work. We've had the SDBOT and its been fucking up AD all over the place and we can't get it totally tracked down. Been working a lot of overtime. I could easily see me not thinking straight. At the time I'd just been dealing with upgrading a few people to SP2 and the firewall fucking shit up. I was at my wits end. I'm just glad the weekend got here and others have to deal with it until Wed. I hate it for them, but I was reaching the point I was useless due to my brain being overworked.
