"What a lousy day for the Vikings in general and Culpepper and Fred Smoot in particular. Culpepper was hobbling on crutches. The charred remains of Smoot left Bank of America Stadium in an urn.

"Carolina receiver Steve Smith burned Smoot so many times I thought the Vikings might wrap their cornerback in a blanket to try to stop him from smoldering. On the plane ride home, he had to sit in the smoking section."

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Fred Smoot is in a serious condition in a Charlotte hospital. He is being treated for burns that he received in the Vikings 38-13 loss to the Carolina Panthers yesterday. Medical staff have said they are finding it hard to treat Smoot as he is talking so much. Smoot's injury is extremely common in Vikings defensive backs.

When questioned Vikings coach Mike Tice said "We saw him burning and considered getting someone over there to help him but we decided against it. We just need to tighten some things up."

Police are searching for Panthers receiver Steve Smith who is believed to have carried out the attack on Smoot.
